Can you be a custodian at 16?

Teen janitors or custodians can typically work at age 16, but specific age requirements depend on state and local labor laws. To thrive as a Teen Janitor, you need strong attention to detail, basic cleaning knowledge, and a willingness to learn safety guidelines, often with on-the-job training as the main requirement. Familiarity with tools such as brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, and non-toxic cleaning products is common, though most skills are taught upon hiring. Dependability, responsibility, and good time management help set apart successful candidates in this role. These skills and qualities are important to ensure that facilities remain clean, safe, and well-maintained for everyone who uses them.

Shifts are usually scheduled after school hours or on weekends and can vary in length based on employer needs. While the work is straightforward, it requires consistency and attention to detail to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all. This entry-level experience can also help teens build valuable work habits and develop professional references for future career opportunities.
