Summary
The Operations Intern is a temporary role providing broad work experience in performing a variety of Nuclear Power Plant Operations tasks of limited scope and complexity. The intern receives training and rotates with rotating crews to better understand the Operations department and the Auxiliary Operator role. In addition, they will participate in one outage during the Internship and support site activities. Under the guidance of supervision and their assigned mentors, interns will develop job skills and will learn about the duties and responsibilities of various Operations tasks to help them make career decisions. Completes training on industry-related topics. The Palo Verde Operations Intern Program is a seven-month developmental program. Upon successful completion of written evaluations and receipt of management approval, participants may be considered as an Auxiliary Operator Trainee.
Minimum Requirements
High School graduate or GED.
At least 18 years of age.
Current Arizona resident.
Must be able to satisfy applicable NRC, security, physical and psychological requirements to work within the protected area.
Successful completion of POSS test.
Preferred Experience/Education:
- Trade/Tech School with emphasis on Energy & Engineering Technologies
- Bachelor's Degree in physical science or medical field
- Associates Degree in Energy and Engineering Systems/Technologies
- Palo Verde experience (>3yrs)
- Hands on mechanical or electrical experience (>1yr)
- Leadership experience
Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:
Basic math and high school algebra skills. Good communications and interpersonal skills.
Nuclear requirement:
Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.
Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage.
This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities.
These are conditions of employment at PVNGS.
Major Accountabilities
1) Completes Palo Verde Systems Overview course, designated Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) courses and associated exams. In addition, completes selected site qualifications, a final interview and practical exam.
2) Embraces the Palo Verde safety culture, including: using Prevent Events tools, participating in pre-job briefings, reporting unsafe conditions, using personal protective equipment (PPE), avoiding injury, avoiding contamination, observing "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA) strategies and demonstrating safety awareness.
3) Sets high goals and seeks out opportunities to achieve results, including: maintaining a positive attitude, using self-checking, demonstrating professionalism, avoiding security violations, observing the "Do It Right The First Time" philosophy, using the right tools for the job and demonstrating skill and ability with hand tools.
4) Works effectively with the team and other work groups, including: working positively with others to achieve common goals, working together to ensure safety and quality and demonstrating a positive attitude while working with others.
5) Maintains effectiveness in varying environments with different tasks, responsibilities and people, including: working well with others, participating actively in training, providing feedback, attending as scheduled, maintaining a positive attitude, adapting to changing expectations of various departments and responding positively to unexpected changes.
6) Expresses ideas clearly and effectively, including: having a questioning attitude, using the phonetic alphabet in communications when required, using three-legged communications when required, and maintaining open lines of communications with mentors.
7) Demonstrates keen desire to learn and understand, including: arriving on time to assigned duties, having a questioning attitude, and demonstrating willingness to listen and take direction.

Any PVGS employee may be called upon for random Fitness For Duty Testing (FFD) during scheduled working hours. Employees must report to FFD at Palo Verde as soon as reasonably practicable, but no more than 120 minutes after being notified. Employees who are onsite when notified will have no more than 60 minutes to report after being notified.
