The Water Treatment Technician reports directly to the Environmental and Chemical Technology Manager and assists the manager by performing a variety of tasks based on the needs of the department. The Water Treatment Technician must be able to work without close supervision in completing assigned tasks, and must exercise initiative and responsibility in performing duties within their capabilities.

Responsibilities
1 - Under the direction of the Environmental and Chemical Technology Manager, the Water Treatment Technician provides the chemical additions, laboratory analysis and equipment necessary to maintain the plant process water, chill water and boiler water systems in proper chemical condition for corrosion control, scaling prevention and biological control.
2 - Collect water samples from all plant process water systems and boilers according to a prescribed schedule and perform laboratory analysis on the water samples using standard laboratory procedures.
3 - Make chemical additions to all plant water systems and boilers, either manually or using automatic feeders, according to prescribed schedule and control specifications and make adjustments to chemical feed and blow down rates in response to the laboratory test results.
4 - Record all data and enter into a computer as required and make charts, graphs and logbook entries as required.
5 - Calibrate and maintains chemical feed equipment including pumps, controllers, sensors, meters and automatic valves. Makes most repairs to pumps and sensors as needed. Initiates requests for additional help on major repairs.
6 - Calibrate and maintains laboratory equipment needed for process water analysis and maintains inventory of reagents.
7 - Visually inspects each water system to determine effectiveness of biological control and other treatment chemicals.
8 - Advises supervisor of problems and makes recommendations using their experience and judgment.
9 - Maintains appropriate inventories of all treatment chemicals and is responsible for the proper handling of empty chemical drums.
10 - Works closely with water treatment servicemen and technical consultants and with plant utilities personnel.
11 - Maintains equipment, chemicals and housekeeping in work areas and laboratories in a safe and orderly manner to prevent injuries to their selves and others.
12 - Performs other miscellaneous and related duties as assigned. Is required to maintain a safe and clean work area. Is required to observe all plant and departmental safety rules
Qualifications
1 - Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
2 - Must perform routine mathematical calculation and enter data into a computer.
3 - Must be able to analyze data and make judgments based on the data.
4 - Must have good communication skills.
5 - Must be able to lift 50 pounds and the ability to handle 500 pound drums using the proper equipment
6 - Must be able to understand and follow safety requirements as the job involves handling hazardous and toxic chemicals including acids, bases, biocides and chlorine.
7 - Must be able to work in all areas of the plant including climbing ladders, wet and slippery areas and in remote areas. Some outdoor work is also required.
8 - Must be able to work with minimum supervision and interpret written and oral instruction accurately
