About the Job

We are seeking a Director of Technology to lead florrent's Development team and drive our technical innovation forward. This role is central to understanding, creating, and optimizing excellent activated carbon and supercapacitor cells—the core of what makes florrent's products exceptional.

As Director of Technology, you will report directly to florrent's Chief Technology Officer and take full ownership of florrent’s product development goals and team. You'll manage a talented group of scientists and engineers, translating company-wide commercial objectives into actionable technical roadmaps. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both deep technical fluency and proven people management skills.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will

  • Lead florrent’s Development team, providing daily and weekly mentorship, guidance, and resources to team members
  • Own all Development projects, including electrolyte development, cylindrical cell creation and optimization, and general metrology initiatives in support of manufacturing QA/QC
  • Run projects directly where appropriate, while empowering and mentoring team members to run some development projects independently
  • Interface with florrent's PMO to leverage project management tools effectively, providing feedback to improve workflows for the Development team
  • Manage the creation of technical reports based on material and electrochemical analyses
  • Actively participate in florrent's management process, synthesizing commercial and operations objectives into technical priorities and medium-term technical project goals; organize team time and resources to accomplish these goals
  • Create systems to track and monitor team velocity, identify roadblocks, and ensure timely delivery against new product introduction timelines
  • Regularly prepare high-level reports for florrent’s management team on technical progress and florrent's state of innovation
Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or a related field
  • 5+ years of direct management experience leading cross-functional teams of scientists, engineers, and/or technicians
  • Demonstrated experience translating business objectives into technical project plans and deliverables
  • Strong background in materials development, electrochemistry, or energy storage technologies
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop technical talent
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing technical reports and executive-level presentations
  • Track record of successful new product introduction or technology commercialization
  • Ability to be on-site in Northampton 3+ days per week
Preferred
  • Experience in a startup or small company environment; comfort wearing multiple hats is a big plus
  • Comfort and experience with direct budget management
  • Background in activated carbon, carbon materials, supercapacitors, or battery technologies
  • Familiarity with electrochemical testing methods and equipment (e.g., battery cyclers, potentiostats, impedance spectroscopy)
  • Experience with materials metrology and analytical instrumentation (gas physisorption, SEM, XRD, Raman, TGA, etc.)
  • Experience with enterprise project management tools (e.g., Microsoft Project, SmartSheet)
  • Familiarity with Python, Matlab, R, or similar programming languages for data analysis
