Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is seeking to hire Technical Writers. The successful candidate will provide technical writing and document development services for the department for a wide variety of department publications.

Essential Functions
  • Under general direction, serves as a Technical Writer for the Illinois Department of Transportation, performing complex, specialized technical functions related to writing, reviewing, editing and formatting the department’s policies, manuals, charters, standard operating procedures, and other publications.
  • Applies advanced features of Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat software to ensure consistency, ease of updates, and compliance with department standards.
  • Maintains internal procedural documentation and templates to ensure consistent practices across business areas.
  • Maintains detailed revision histories in accordance with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 document control requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to two years of secretarial/business college and one year of office experience, or completion of high school and three years of office experience, or three years of independent business experience.
  • Requires skill in keyboarding accurately at 30 wpm.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefers extensive analytical and research skills.
  • Prefers advanced knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge of composition, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Prefers extensive editorial and formatting skills.
  • Prefers the ability to establish and develop written instructions and procedures.
  • Prefers technical writing certification(s) and/or completed training.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires successful completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
