Job description

Research Associate

Location: West Salem, Wisconsin
Come grow with DLF!
At DLF, we're passionate about plants, people, and progress. As a global leader in high-quality grass seed for agriculture and turf, we're helping create a greener, more sustainable future.
Step into a dynamic, hands-on role driving R&D for alfalfa, forage grasses, and turf grasses. As a Research Associate, you will split your time between the field and the greenhouse, utilizing your deep understanding of agricultural concepts to deliver clear, actionable experimental data. This is an opportunity to collaborate directly with the Trials Excellence Manager to make key agronomic decisions, proactively solve complex challenges, and build a personal development plan focused on innovation and career growth within DLF.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data & Operations: Drive the physical execution of field trials by operating farm equipment (tractors, planters, harvesters) and using digital tools to collect crucial seasonal data.
  • Greenhouse & Field Execution: Drive greenhouse plant propagation, disease screening, and breeding population development, alongside in-field forage sampling, drying, and processing.
  • Field Management: Monitor the research farm for pests, applying chemicals, fertilizers, and treatments precisely according to established protocols.
  • Teamwork & Safety: Work collaboratively with the research team and help coordinate temporary employees when necessary, all while ensuring strict adherence to DLF's quality, compliance, and safety standards.
  • Team Collaboration & Safety: Oversee temporary and hourly employees as needed, foster open communication, and strictly adhere to DLF's quality, compliance, and stewardship standards to ensure safe operations.

What You Bring

  • Education & Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Plant Sciences, or a related field (or 3+ years of equivalent experience in agricultural research, greenhouse production, or seed technology).
  • Work Style: An agile, continuous learner who excels both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license with a good driving record, plus the ability to obtain a DOT medical card and a Pesticide Applicator's License.
  • Resilience & Flexibility: The physical ability to safely lift 50 lbs and experience working in varying field weather conditions. You must be willing to travel up to 15% and put in extended hours during busy agricultural seasons.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong mechanical aptitude and a solid understanding of regional crop production, farm operations, and agricultural chemicals. Technical experience with precision agriculture methods is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Physical working conditions include sitting, bending, or standing while performing data analysis or collecting data. Frequent walking and lifting up to 50 pounds. Will include continuous use of hands for repetitive tasks. The position works frequently in the field; therefore, the Research Associate will be exposed to potentially hazardous conditions: weather, chemical or slippery conditions of work area.

Compensation and Benefits

DLF offers a compensation plan that includes a base salary, benefits that include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, retirement savings plan with company contribution, paid holidays, vacation, and personal days. Compensation will be based on experience.
