Technical Project Manager Software information

What is a technical project manager in software?

A Technical Project Manager in software is a professional responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing software development projects. They bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders, ensuring that development goals align with business objectives. Their duties include managing timelines, budgets, resources, and risks while facilitating communication between developers, designers, and clients. Technical Project Managers often have a background in software engineering or IT, enabling them to understand technical challenges and guide teams effectively.

How does a technical project manager in software typically coordinate between development teams and stakeholders?

Technical Project Managers in software play a crucial role in bridging the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. They often facilitate regular meetings, such as sprint planning and progress reviews, to ensure everyone is aligned on project goals and timelines. Clear communication and documentation are key, as they translate technical updates for non-technical stakeholders and relay business priorities to the development team. This collaborative approach helps manage expectations, mitigate risks early, and ensure successful delivery of software projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical project manager in software, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager in Software, you need a strong understanding of software development processes, project management methodologies (such as Agile or Scrum), and a relevant technical background, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana, as well as certifications such as PMP or Certified ScrumMaster, is typically expected. Leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you manage cross-functional teams and stakeholder expectations. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet quality standards in complex software environments.

This role is based at one of our corporate offices in Memphis, TN, McLean, VA or Dallas, TX
This is your chance to be a part of an in-house Technology team that's creating consumer-facing, modern technologies improving the hospitality industry around the world! As a Manager Software Engineering, you will bring your technical skills to a hospitality company with an award-winning culture. On the Software Engineering - Portfolio Management team, reporting to the Director Portfolio Management, you will support projects including working with hotel teams, corporate finance, and internal partners. Your responsibilities include defining and delivering technology applications that support financial applications.
What you'll do during a typical day:
  • Support Hilton's custom-built financial application and overall software strategy, ensuring enhancements align with priorities and meet defined acceptance criteria.
  • Design and deliver high-quality technical solutions using established methodologies, minimizing rework and meeting business and end-user needs.
  • Serve as an escalation point for critical priorities, driving issue resolution and coordinating across engineering teams and external partners.
  • Define and manage requirements, use cases, and user stories, supporting Agile delivery through Confluence and Jira.

How you'll collaborate with others:
  • Partner across Financial/PMS vendors, technology workstreams, and finance stakeholders to deliver solutions aligned with agreed standards and expectations.
  • Guide internal and external partners, identify risks early, manage expectations, and drive mitigation plans to support successful delivery outcomes.
  • Track and communicate progress, issues, and risks to stakeholders and leadership while collaborating in Agile with Engineering to deliver features and validate junior developer code against requirements.

Projects you'll take ownership of:

  • Mobilize Hilton Technology teams and external partners to quickly address issues and deliver enhancements for projects.

  • Hands-on knowledge of modern development practices (Agile/Scrum, CI/CD, cloud architecture, APIs), with the ability to review designs, guide technical decisions, and remove delivery blockers.
  • Experience partnering with Product, Architecture, Security, Infrastructure, and external partners to translate priorities into executable engineering roadmaps.
  • This is a hybrid role and would require to be near one of our three US office locations (Memphis, McLean, Dallas)
  • Travel up to 5%

It would be useful if you have:
  • Bachelor's Degree, or Associate's Degree plus 6+ years of Technology related experience, or High School Degree/GED plus 12+ years of Technology related experience.
  • Seven (7) + years of professional work experience in Technology or a related field.
