Technical Network information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, troubleshooting, and infrastructure design, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with networking hardware, Cisco or Juniper certifications (like CCNA/CCNP), and experience with network monitoring tools are typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals excel when diagnosing issues and collaborating with teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient network operations in any organization.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a Technical Network role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Technical Network roles often encounter challenges such as managing complex network infrastructures, staying current with rapidly evolving technologies, and ensuring robust security against emerging threats. Troubleshooting network outages or performance issues under tight deadlines can be particularly stressful. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as cybersecurity, systems administration, and support staff—is essential for effective incident resolution. Staying proactive by participating in continuous training, maintaining clear documentation, and fostering open communication with team members can help address these challenges and ensure network reliability.

What is a Technical Network?

A Technical Network refers to the interconnected system of hardware devices, software, and protocols that enable communication, data transfer, and resource sharing within or between organizations. Technical networks are managed by IT professionals to maintain reliability and address issues like security, scalability, and performance. They are essential for supporting business operations, remote collaboration, and internet connectivity.

As a key leader in our infrastructure team, you will drive best-in-class cabling quality across AWS' global data centers, helping us maintain our position as the world's most efficient and cost-effective cloud infrastructure provider.
In this role, you will lead a team of Cabling Quality Assurance (QA) Program Managers and Technicians, establishing and maintaining the highest quality standards for our data center network deployments. Your team will be instrumental in ensuring that all design, build, scaling, and hardware installations meet AWS's rigorous quality guidelines, ultimately enabling seamless cloud services for our customers worldwide.
Key job responsibilities
Lead and develop a diverse team of both technical and non-technical Network Cabling Quality Assurance Program Managers and Technicians
Establish and oversee comprehensive quality control systems, including inspection mechanisms, development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and performance measurements
Partner with network design teams, construction managers, deployment personnel, and vendors to develop and enforce installation standards
Manage end-to-end quality metrics, risk management, and preventative measures
Drive continuous improvement through data-driven process optimization and programmatic focus

This position requires 25% travel within the region to AWS Data Centers for project reviews and onsite coordination

You'll start by reviewing quality metrics from previous day's inspections and checklist findings and address any immediate concerns with your team. Throughout the day, you'll conduct one-on-one meetings with team members, participate in cross-functional planning sessions, analyze trend data, drive root cause analysis, and identify improvement opportunities for our programs.
You'll work directly with Cabling Quality Assurance team members as well as Design, Construction, Deployment managers and vendors to refine structured cabling and installation standards. You will visit data centers to ensure compliance, facilitate partner team training, and gather insights for continuous improvement

You will find yourself leading technical whiteboard sessions to resolve implementation challenges and presenting quality metrics to senior leadership.
About the team
As part of AWS Infrastructure, our organization prepares, plans, and builds the data centers that comprise the AWS cloud. This team drives continuous improvement of AWS Data Centers to provide more efficient and reliable infrastructure to customers.
