We are seeking a Technical Writer, Journeyman to support our team at Project Manager Mission Command, supporting Prime contractor who is contracted with U.S. Army. This support will be in a hybrid capacity in Orlando, FL. This position may allow for hybrid work; however, employees must be able and willing to travel and provide in-office or on-site support as required by customer requirements, project demands, or business needs.
Duties:
  • Perform editorial peer review of technical documents.
  • Incorporate comments received from peer and customer reviews to technical documents.
  • Perform research for software and hardware systems including system design and specifications.
  • Analyze and learn new hardware and software systems for functionality in operation and design.
  • Work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to collect and develop useful information for incorporation into technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with team members like provisioners, graphic artists, programmers, developers, engineers, SMEs, customers, and end-users to develop content for introduction to technical documentation.
  • Write/update/edit procedural steps for operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of hardware and software systems.
  • Write/update/edit equipment/software descriptions, theories of operation, and maintenance plans for hardware and software systems.
  • Write/update/edit illustrated parts breakdowns for hardware systems.
  • Organize and edit content into Extensible Markup Language (XML) tagging structure per Document Type Definition (DTD)-specified hierarchy.
  • Resolve XML/DTD/stylesheet errors.
  • Research MIL-STD and DTD organization and intent.
  • Create graphic requests to aid with procedural/descriptive content.
  • Attend weekly meetings with program team, customers, and subset groups to stay up to date on directives, progress, and changes.
  • Attend events onsite at Orlando office or on base at customer location to perform In Progress Reviews (IPRs), validations, or verifications for various technical documents.
  • Software used in development of technical manuals includes Notepad++, Arbortext Editor, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Visio, Snagit, Alienbrain Version Control and Digital Asset Management System.
  • Software used to coordinate and communicate includes Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Sharepoint.

Desired Experience:
  • Experience working with desktop publishing software such as FrameMaker, Arbortext, and/or MadCap Flare. (Arbortext Editor experience a plus).
  • Experience developing and editing XML content.
  • Experience authoring technical documentation in XML for Interactive Authoring and Display Software (IADS) integration a plus.
  • Operational and maintenance background in DoD Systems.
  • Technical Manual and/or training development experience on military systems.
  • Technical experience in operating and/or maintaining military systems.
  • Working knowledge of military documentation development standards MIL-STD- 40051, MIL-HDBK-1222, and standard military writing and Quality Assurance practices.
  • User level experience with Military Technical Manuals.
  • Experience with mechanical drawings, electrical flow diagrams, or schematics.

Required Education:
  • Education/Experience: BA or BS Degree in Technical Communication or related degree.

Required Experience:
  • 1-5 years of related experience.
  • Experience working with paper-based and/or electronic-based technical documentation.
  • Experience writing and updating technical manual procedures such as operation, maintenance, and/or troubleshooting.
  • Excellent grammar and written communication skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to track and comply with strict schedules.
  • Desire and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Travel requirement will be up to 20%, but likely less frequent
