Job description

Wood is currently seeking an experienced Business Development Manager to support our growth in several key US Geographic locations. 

The Business Development Manager (BDM) will focus on identifying, positioning, and securing construction-led opportunities across heavy industrial markets, with emphasis on mechanical, piping, civil/structural, and related field execution services. Electrical and instrumentation experience is preferred but not required. 

This hybrid opportunity is based in the Greater Houston area and supports multiple U.S. locations, with a particular focus on the Gulf Coast region.

The Role

Reporting to the VP of Business Development, this position will focus on expanding construction opportunities across refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, LNG, terminals, manufacturing, and other heavy industrial markets.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and advancing client relationships, identifying construction-led opportunities, supporting pursuit strategy, and positioning Wood early for work across mechanical, piping, civil/structural, and related field execution scopes. Electrical and instrumentation experience is considered an added benefit.

This role requires a candidate with strong Gulf Coast market knowledge and either existing client relationships or a demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with owner/operators, EPC/EPCM firms, procurement organizations, construction leaders, project directors, and site-level stakeholders.

Expected: 

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical, construction management, business, or related field 
  • 12+ years experience in business development, construction, project execution, operations, maintenance, or commercial roles within the heavy industrial market 
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or developing construction-led opportunities in the Gulf Coast region 
  • Experience in engineering, procurement, construction, EPC, EPCM, maintenance, turnaround, field services, or industrial construction environments 
  • Strong understanding of heavy industrial construction scopes, particularly mechanical, piping, and civil/structural. Electrical and instrumentation experience is preferred but not required 
  • Existing client relationships or demonstrated ability to build relationships with Gulf Coast owner/operators, EPC/EPCM firms, procurement organizations, construction leaders, project directors, site leaders, and technical stakeholders 
  • Sound understanding of projects in the refining, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, terminal, manufacturing, or broader heavy industrial sectors 
  • Proficient in use of Client Relationship Management (CRM) tools and systems, with strong discipline around opportunity management, forecasting, and pipeline accuracy 
  • Good understanding of the economic, commercial, safety, and execution drivers in construction and EPC/EPCM businesses 
  • Experience developing account plans, relationship maps, zippering plans, win strategies, and pursuit plans 
  • Experience with the key concepts of HSE leadership, construction safety culture, and field execution risk 
  • Advanced computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft office tools, including  Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Demonstrated proactive and outcome-driven attitude 
  • Ability to manage a diverse and challenging portfolio of clients and opportunities across multiple industrial sectors 
  • Hands-on approach with internal sales, proposals, estimating, commercial, and operations teams; willing to support the development of presentations, proposals, and commercial agreements

  • Ability to understand client capital plans, turnaround schedules, maintenance drivers, constructability challenges, and site execution constraints 
  • Strong executive presence and ability to engage across multiple levels of the client organization, from site leadership to procurement to executive decision makers

Typical responsibilities 

Strategy & Growth 

  • Identify, develop, and advance Gulf Coast construction opportunities across heavy industrial markets, including refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, LNG, terminals, manufacturing, and related sectors 
  • Focus on construction-led growth opportunities involving mechanical, piping, civil/structural, field execution, fabrication, modularization, constructability, maintenance, small capital projects, turnarounds, and site-based execution support 
  • Support to the VP Growth & Business Development  with accurate forecasting /re-forecasting activities and prospect portfolio management, and construction pipeline development
  • Leverage the full depth and breadth of Wood's construction, projects, operations, consulting, engineering, and technical capabilities to create integrated global solutions
  • Identify and support potential partnering, subcontracting, fabrication, specialty craft, or local execution relationships that strengthen Wood's construction offering and competitiveness 
  • Maintain awareness of Gulf Coast construction market activity, competitor positioning, client capital plans, turnaround cycles, maintenance spending, and major project opportunities 
  • Be wholly familiar with various Government apparatus as it applies to contract approvals and awards as appropriate 

Client Relationship Management 

  • Own and develop a targeted portfolio of Gulf Coast construction clients and prospects, including owner/operators, EPC/EPCM firms, procurement organizations, construction leadership, project directors, site leaders, and key technical stakeholders 
  • Build, maintain, and leverage trusted client relationships to identify opportunities early, understand client drivers, and position Wood before formal procurement or bid events 
  • Identification, validation and leadership of key prospects and opportunities 
  • Facilitate client meetings, site visits, and presentations, and executive engagement with appropriate Wood personnel to support our client needs and support business objectives 
  • Responsible for the full ownership of 3-5 Key Client accounts, including account planning, developing zippering plans, relationship mapping, opportunity strategy development, and Client engagement plans 
  • Create, review, manage, and maintain the integrity of all opportunity records in Wood's CRM system to ensure accuracy, governance, and compliance

Internal Sales

  • Develop win strategies and win plans for construction pursuits, including early positioning, client drivers, competitor analysis, value proposition development, and capture strategy 
  • Work with operations, estimating, proposals, commercial, legal, HSE, engineering, project controls, and construction leadership to develop competitive and executable offerings 
  • Use commercial, contractual, and construction execution acumen to identify barriers to success and enable early assessment of Wood's competitiveness 
  • Support proposal development, client presentations, commercial agreements, and negotiation strategies for construction-led opportunities 
  • Coordinate input into the Lead Review Meeting (LRM) process and participate in reviews with segment, regional, and construction leadership 
  • Collaborate across Wood's regional businesses to bring the right capabilities to clients and ensure an aligned, structured, and strategic approach to business growth  
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities across construction, operations, maintenance, engineering, consulting, and project delivery services to expand account value 

Commercial & Account Growth 

  • Support growth targets related to bookings, revenue, margin, and strategic account expansion 
  • Identify and advance opportunities for master services agreements, framework agreements, alliance agreements, preferred contractor positions, and repeat work programs 
  • Partner with commercial and operations leadership to support pricing strategy, contract positioning, and negotiation preparation 
  • Track competitor activity, client contract expirations, incumbent performance, and upcoming bid events to support proactive positioning 
  • Develop account strategies that support sustainable growth, client retention, margin improvement, and long-term relationship value
