What is a technical account manager?

A Technical Account Manager (TAM) is a professional who serves as the main point of contact between a company and its clients for technical support and account management. TAMs work closely with customers to understand their technical needs, provide guidance on product usage, resolve issues, and ensure overall customer satisfaction. They often collaborate with engineering, sales, and support teams to deliver tailored solutions and help clients achieve their business objectives. TAMs play a crucial role in building long-term relationships and maximizing the value clients receive from a company's products or services.

How to become a technical account manager?

To become a technical account manager (TAM), you need a bachelor’s degree in advertising, communications, public relations, or a related field, and many aspiring TAMs also obtain a master’s degree. Other qualifications for this job include a thorough knowledge of business and marketing, experience as an assistant account manager or related position, and industry certification. The career of a technical account manager is demanding. You must stay focused and composed in high-stress, high-stakes situations. Strong communication skills are essential because you interact with clients, staff, and customers on a day-to-day basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Account Manager, you need a solid background in IT or engineering, customer relationship management, and typically a degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with CRM software, cloud platforms, and technical troubleshooting tools is often required, along with certifications like ITIL or relevant vendor accreditations. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you build trust and deliver value to clients. These competencies are essential for managing client expectations, resolving technical issues efficiently, and fostering long-term business partnerships.

How do technical account managers typically balance technical troubleshooting with client relationship management in their daily work?

Technical Account Managers (TAMs) often split their time between resolving technical issues and proactively nurturing client relationships. While addressing technical challenges—such as troubleshooting software integrations or coordinating with engineering teams—they also serve as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring their needs are met and anticipating potential concerns. TAMs regularly schedule status meetings, provide product training, and relay client feedback to internal teams. This dual focus helps build trust and ensures clients maximize the value of the company's products and services.

Job description

Description

Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses-including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people's behavior-to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.

We are seeking an Account Manager to join our team and help us achieve our ambitious goals for our business and the planet.

What you get to do:

You will be the focal point for Uplight engagement with utility clients, responsible for account planning and strategy, customer relationship development and management, delivery against contract and business outcomes, and customer satisfaction and churn. You will lead and contribute to cross-functional teamwork to deliver results, improve how we work, and drive decarbonization outcomes and the advancement of the clean energy economy. You have experience in the energy industry, software, or customer management; have strong communication skills, and are passionate about working closely with customers.

What you will contribute:

  • Be the expert in your account's strategy, business, market, and goals.
  • In partnership with leadership, define and deliver on account strategy and plan.
  • Accountable for delivering against contract and business outcomes and managing internal and external tracking and progress against contract metrics.
  • Lead customers toward realizing business value through Uplight's solutions.
  • Accountable for churn and customer satisfaction metrics for your customers in alignment with Uplight's strategy.
  • Manage customer expectations and scope for contracts, managing scope discussions and changes with customers in alignment with Uplight's strategy.
  • Build strong relationships with customers from individual contributor to senior levels.
  • Manage the customer's interface with Uplight, appropriately prioritizing and funneling the work to insert into the business in alignment with Uplight's strategy and plan.
  • Participate in cross-functional teamwork across multiple groups to deliver against our contractual commitments and effectively manage our customers.
  • Participate in improvement efforts to reduce churn, improve CSAT, and manage cost-of-delivery for our customers in line with our financial plan.
  • Specific product knowledge and expertise for the solutions for your customers.

What you bring to Uplight:

  • Preferably 3-5 years of experience in Project Management, Account Management or Customer Success, preferably at a SaaS or enterprise software company.
  • Strong customer orientation and presence in front of senior management.
  • Expertise developing and maintaining key relationships across an organization, from the senior level and deeper.
  • Experience working on large, complex IT or similar technology projects requiring attention to detail, planning, and multi-channel communication requirements.
  • Attention to detail and ability to internalize and communicate a wide array of information.
  • Experience working across departments and colleague personas to drive cross-functional work streams to completion.
  • Independent thinker who proactively identifies issues, interdependencies, and solutions
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Preferably SaaS business model experience.
  • Preferably Energy or utility industry experience.
  • Passion for energy, its impact on our customers, their customers, and the world.
  • Values alignment.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time
  • Ideally looking for PST or EST located candidates to support clients in those timezones
  • Management of Demand Response Programs are a plus
