What is a team physician?

Team physicians are medical doctors who specialize in providing healthcare to athletes and sports teams. They are responsible for diagnosing, treating, and preventing sports-related injuries and illnesses, as well as promoting overall wellness and peak performance. Team physicians often work closely with athletic trainers, coaches, and other healthcare professionals to develop treatment plans and ensure the safety of all team members. Their role may include attending games and practices, performing physical exams, and making decisions about an athlete's readiness to play.

How does a team physician typically collaborate with athletic trainers and coaches during a sports season?

Team Physicians work closely with athletic trainers and coaches to monitor athlete health, manage injuries, and develop safe return-to-play protocols. Regular communication is essential, especially when coordinating care for injured players or making decisions about participation in games and practices. Team Physicians often attend practices and competitions, provide on-site medical assessments, and lead educational sessions for staff and athletes about injury prevention and wellness. This collaborative approach ensures the medical needs of the team are met while supporting optimal athletic performance.
