How much do prn physician jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for prn physician in the United States is $217,445.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $190,000.00 and $244,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does scheduling typically work for PRN physicians, and what level of flexibility can I expect in this role?

PRN Physicians, also known as 'as needed' or per diem physicians, generally enjoy a high degree of flexibility in their work schedules. Assignments are often based on facility needs, such as covering shifts for full-time staff who are on leave or addressing patient surges. While this flexibility allows you to select shifts that fit your availability, it can also mean that work is less predictable and may require occasional short-notice assignments. It's common to coordinate closely with staffing coordinators or practice managers, and being responsive and adaptable is highly valued in this role.

What is a PRN physician?

A PRN physician is a medical doctor who works on an as-needed, or 'pro re nata,' basis rather than holding a full-time or part-time position. PRN physicians fill in for regular staff during absences, busy periods, or special situations, providing flexibility for both the physician and the healthcare facility. This role is common in hospitals, clinics, and urgent care centers where patient volumes can fluctuate. PRN physicians may have varying schedules and often work in multiple locations or facilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PRN physician?

To thrive as a PRN Physician, you need a medical degree, active physician licensure, and expertise in diagnostic and clinical care across various patient populations. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine platforms, and current medical protocols is typically required. Strong decision-making, adaptability, and excellent interpersonal skills help PRN physicians seamlessly integrate into diverse healthcare teams and environments. These skills ensure high-quality, flexible patient care and effective collaboration in fast-paced, variable clinical settings.
