What is a tax software developer?

Tax software developers are specialized software engineers who design, build, and maintain applications that assist individuals, businesses, and tax professionals with tax preparation and filing. They work on developing user-friendly interfaces, integrating tax law changes, ensuring data security, and automating complex calculations. Their role is crucial in keeping tax software accurate, compliant, and efficient for end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax software developer?

To thrive as a Tax Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, C#, or Python), a solid understanding of tax regulations, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tax preparation software, version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as .NET or Spring Boot is typically required, and certifications in software development or taxation can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and interpreting complex tax requirements. These skills ensure the development of accurate, secure, and user-friendly tax software that complies with evolving legal standards.

What are some common challenges faced by tax software developers when integrating new tax regulations into existing systems?

Tax Software Developers often encounter challenges when adapting systems to comply with frequently changing tax laws and regulations. These updates can be complex, requiring thorough analysis to ensure that all calculations and forms remain accurate and compliant across different jurisdictions. Developers must also collaborate closely with tax experts and QA teams to interpret legal requirements correctly and test for edge cases. Balancing rapid implementation with rigorous testing is crucial to minimize errors that could impact users during tax season.

Job description

Are you someone who is driven to build and test high quality software, acts autonomously, and has experience leading software quality teams in broadscale transformation programs? Are you someone who loves to learn and enjoys solving the most complex problems? Are you ready to take the next leap in your career by leveraging your experience to influence how the future of Workflow capabilities drives business value at Deloitte Global Employer Services (GES)?
If you want your work to matter at global scale, in a stack that's actively modernizing (including AI-led engineering), and on a team that values judgement as much as code - we'd like to meet you.
Work you'll do
As a Senior Software Engineer on our GlobalAdvantage (GA) platform, you'll own the design and delivery of the workflow and integration capabilities at the center of that transformation. This is a role for an engineer who's ready to move past executing tasks and into owning outcomes - someone who can navigate ambiguity, make sound technical calls without being told how, and raise the bar for people around them while still learning something new every week.
You'll own the technical delivery of workflow and integration features end to end - from design through deployment and production support - and help set the engineering standard across the platform. Your impact will be measured by delivery quality, speed of execution, and the business value you unlock. Day to day, you will:
  • Design and build workflow and task management capabilities that power GES business processes - using Pega, .Net, C# and other technologies.
  • Develop and support REST APIs, microservices, and integration services across internal and client-facing platforms.
  • Own your modules and features - including technical design, effort estimation, unit testing, deployment support, and production issue resolution - and drive quality, maintainability, and reuse across the codebase.
  • Contribute to and shape technical design decisions, code reviews, and engineering standards, exercising judgment on trade-offs rather than deferring them.
  • Elevate the team by mentoring less experienced engineers, sharing context, and improving how the group builds - while staying open to learning from architects, quality engineers, and peers.
  • Collaborate across functions with product managers, architects, technical program managers, engineering managers, quality engineers, and business stakeholders.
  • Improve the platform continuously - performance tuning, application stability, supportability, and delivery practices.
A successful candidate would possess these skills:
  • The ability to operate independently with minimal direction and be trusted with ownership of meaningful work
  • South technical judgement in ambiguous situations - knowing when to decide, when to ask, and how to defend a trade-off
  • A quality-first mindset and genuine attention to detail in what you ship
  • The instinct to lift others up - mentoring, unblocking, and modeling good engineering
  • Clear, effective written and verbal communication with both technical and business audiences
  • The composure to prioritize and deliver across multiple workstreams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
The team
At Deloitte Tax LLP, our Global Employer Services (GES) Technology Group consultants help multinational clients develop programs, processes and digital offerings to manage a global workforce and the compliance obligations arising from global mobility, business travel and remote working. People within our technology group come from a diverse background - they partner with our go-to-market teams and global clients to solve challenging problems and design experiences and products that anticipate what our Deloitte clients will want and solutions that keep them compliant with global and local regulations.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities within a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2 - 3 days per week
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of software development experience in workflow automation, process management, or case management solutions - through COTS tools such as Pega, custom development such as .NET, or a combination - including demonstrated ownership of features or modules delivered end to end with limited oversight.
  • Proven ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions, and a track record of collaborating with, guiding, or mentoring other engineers.
  • Limited immigration sponsorship may be available.
  • Ability to travel up to 20%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve.
  • One of the following active accreditations obtained in process, or willing/able to obtain:
    • Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA
    • If not CPA eligible:
      • Licensed Attorney
      • Enrolled Agent
      • AWS Certified Solutions Architect
      • Certified SAFE Agile Software Engineer
      • Certified SAFE DevOps Practitioner
      • Certified SAFE Architect
Preferred:
  • Background supporting multinational clients
  • Background with global mobility technology, workforce mobility tools, or compliance reporting solutions
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, including networking, security controls, and deployment architecture
  • Experience with DevOps or DevSecOps practices, continuous integration/continuous deployment tooling, and infrastructure as code
  • Experience applying cybersecurity or compliance frameworks such as National Institute of Standards and Technology, ISO 27001, SOC 2, or data privacy standards such as General Data Protection Regulation
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, deployment, testing, and other application tooling platforms, as well as Jira, ServiceNow, Azure DevOps, or similar program tracking or information technology service management tools
  • Pega or TOGAF certification (or willing to obtain)
  • Effective written and verbal communication and strong attention to quality.
