Job description

OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW
Agresta, Storms & O'Leary, PC (ASO) is a full-service CPA firm with offices across central and southern Indiana and approximately 40 full-time professionals. The firm provides assurance, tax, business consulting, and entrepreneurial accounting services to a diverse client base that includes closely held and entrepreneurial businesses, nonprofits, government-regulated entities, manufacturers, construction firms, service organizations, and individuals. ASO is adding a Senior Tax Associate to its growing team. This role is built for tax professionals who are ready to own preparation end-to-end, take on more complex work, and begin mentoring less experienced staff as a step toward Supervisor and Manager responsibilities.
WORK ARRANGEMENT
This role is primarily in-office, with hybrid flexibility based on experience and performance. The firm's leadership values a collaborative, in-person culture while recognizing that strong performers benefit from the latitude to manage their schedules around client needs and personal commitments. This role can sit out of any one of the 6 offices.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Prepare complex federal and state tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, trusts, and nonprofit organizations with limited supervision
• Perform first-level review of returns prepared by Associates, providing constructive feedback and helping develop technical skills
• Identify tax planning opportunities and surface them to managers and partners for client discussion
• Conduct tax research on moderate to complex issues and prepare clear written memos summarizing findings and recommendations
• Serve as a day-to-day client contact on assigned engagements, handling document requests, status updates, and routine technical questions
• Review accounting data and financial statements to identify issues that affect tax positions
• Help train and onboard Associates and interns, sharing knowledge of firm systems, workpaper standards, and quality expectations
• Stay current on federal and state legislative changes and apply updates to client work
• Support managers and partners on planning projects, special engagements, and process improvement initiatives
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field
• 3-5 years of public accounting experience with substantive tax preparation work
• CPA license or active progress toward licensure (passed or in process)
• Strong technical foundation across individual and business tax, with the ability to handle returns of moderate complexity independently
• Demonstrated ability to manage time across multiple concurrent engagements
• Solid client-facing communication skills and comfort interacting with clients directly
• Attention to detail, ownership mentality, and a track record of delivering quality work on deadline
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Active CPA license
• Experience with CCH tax software environment (or demonstrated ability to learn new platforms quickly)
• Exposure to partnership, S-corp, or trust taxation at meaningful complexity
• Experience mentoring, training, or reviewing the work of junior staff
• Familiarity with advisory or planning work beyond compliance
WHAT ASO OFFERS
• A clear progression path toward Supervisor, Manager, and beyond, with leadership actively invested in your development
• Increasing autonomy and ownership as trust is established, including direct client interaction and review responsibilities
• Meaningful exposure to complex work across a diverse industry mix rather than narrow specialization too early
• CPA exam support for candidates still completing licensure
• A trust-based, output-driven culture where leadership measures results, not keystrokes
• Hybrid work schedule with a flexible offseason schedule
• Dress for Your Day policy
• Competitive PTO package plus holidays, with additional time off negotiable outside of busy season
• Health and dental insurance
• Employer 401(k) match
• Performance-based bonus opportunity
• A collaborative, family-friendly environment that values work-life balance without sacrificing professional standards
COMPENSATION & HOURS
Compensation is commensurate with experience, qualifications, and the value the candidate brings to the practice. The firm offers a competitive base salary, performance-based bonus structure, employer 401(k) match, and comprehensive benefits. Full details will be discussed during the interview process.
Expected hours include a 50 to 60-hour work week during busy season, with a flexible schedule during the offseason.
