Position Summary    

The Tax Operations Manager leads the execution and optimization of tax operations, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant tax reporting and withholding. This role oversees Forms 1099, 1042-S, and 8288 reporting, transaction‑based withholding, and tax obligations related to mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

The role partners closely with the Payments, Relationship and Releases teams as well as external advisors to manage withholding, reporting, reconciliations, and audits while mitigating regulatory and financial risk. The Tax Operations Manager maintains oversight of tax controls, monitors regulatory changes, and supports complex transactional activity, including acquisitions and escrow‑based payments. In addition to day‑to‑day tax operations, this position drives process standardization, scalability, and efficiency through strong operational controls, technology enablement, and cross‑functional collaboration, contributing to the organization’s overall compliance and transaction success.

Location: This is either a hybrid position based in our Denver, CO office or a fully remote position from within the US based Mountain (MST) or Pacific (PST) time zones ONLY

Compensation: The salary range for this position is between $105k and $120k, depending on experience level.

Primary Responsibilities    

  • Lead and manage the Tax Operations team, providing coaching, performance management, and development to ensure high‑quality execution and strong employee engagement.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day tax operations, including withholding, reconciliation, and reporting for Forms 1042‑S, 8288 and 8288-A, and 1099, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage tax responsibilities related to mergers, acquisitions, and transaction‑based payments, including Shareholder tax form validation, deal review support, and withholding determination.
  • Partner cross‑functionally with the Payments, Relationship and Releases teams as well as external advisors to ensure appropriate tax treatment and consistent execution of tax processes.
  • Establish, maintain, and enhance tax controls, workflows, and documentation to mitigate financial, operational, and regulatory risk.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and guide the team in implementing required process or compliance updates.
  • Oversee tax reconciliations, filings, audit support, and responses to regulatory inquiries.
  • Drive operational efficiency and scalability through process improvement, standardization, and effective use of technology.
  • Prepare, send, and file Customer Tax Documents and other related documents such as 1099s, 1042-S forms, and 8288 forms within the appropriate timelines as stipulated by the IRS.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex tax issues, providing guidance and decision‑making support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of tax operations and organizational objectives

 Required Qualifications & Skills  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in tax operations, compliance, or related tax functions.
  • 3–5 years of people management or team leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. tax reporting and withholding requirements, including Forms 1042‑S, 8288‑A, and 1099, with deep familiarity across payroll and M&A‑related transactions.
  • Experience supporting tax requirements for mergers, acquisitions, and transaction‑based payments.
  • Proven ability to lead scalable operations through effective controls, procedure development, and risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrated success partnering cross‑functionally and across geographically distributed teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and operate effectively in a fast‑paced, regulatory environment.
  • High attention to detail with a strong focus on accuracy, compliance, and customer risk management.
  • NetSuite experience preferred; knowledge of the M&A process a plus.
