Job description

Description Join Our Team in the Heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. ~ 2 Positions Available~ The City of Brevard, NC, is seeking experienced, motivated, and community-minded law enforcement professionals to serve as Police Sergeant currently assigned to the Patrol Division. Nestled in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, Brevard is known for its outdoor recreation, vibrant arts scene, and welcoming community spirit.

This supervisory position performs a full range of general law enforcement duties, including crime prevention, traffic enforcement, and emergency response. The Police Sergeant supports the Shift Supervisor by directing operations in their absence, mentoring junior officers, and assisting with officer orientation and training. The role requires strong leadership, decision-making skills, and a commitment to community-oriented policing.

Minimum Salary: $62,279 negotiable dependent on qualifications. Incentives offered for Associates, Bachelors, and Masters Degree, Advanced and Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificates, and Bilingual Proficiency. Patrol currently works the rotating Dupont Schedule.

Candidates are encouraged to apply by March 1, 2026. Initial candidate review will begin March 1st and the hiring process will include a variety of assessment exercises. Examples of Duties Patrols city streets by vehicle, foot, or other means to prevent and detect crime.

Responds to incidents including suspicious activity, traffic collisions, domestic disturbances, and citizen complaints. Investigates crimes and accidents; gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and prepares reports. Apprehends suspects and prepares for prosecution, including providing courtroom testimony.

Supervises and supports shift operations in the absence of the Supervisor Commander; assigns and reviews work, answers questions, and assists with officer training. Builds positive relationships with community members and local organizations. Maintains and ensures proper care of assigned equipment, including vehicles and weapons.

Assists with emergency operations, evacuations, and disaster response. Performs administrative tasks as assigned and required Qualifications Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. 3 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience.

Current North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer Certification. Valid North Carolina Driver's License. Preferred Qualifications Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred.

5 years of progressive law enforcement experience. Previous supervisory experience preferred. Preferred certifications in radar, breathalyzer operations, first line supervisor school, Police Law Institute, and Field Training Officer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong knowledge of law enforcement methods, local/state/federal laws, and department procedures. Exhibits the highest degree of integrity and work ethic. Skilled in de-escalation, conflict resolution, and emergency response.

Capable of exercising sound judgment and leadership in high-pressure situations. Proficient in using law enforcement technology, report writing, and court testimony. Effective communicator-both written and verbal-with strong interpersonal skills.

Physically capable of performing duties including heavy lifting, running, climbing, and extended periods of standing or walking.
