What is a talent manager?

A talent manager works with artists in the entertainment industry. In this role, your job is to manage and develop the careers of your clients, help them decide on an artistic direction, and guide them towards the best new opportunities. Your primary duties involve offering creative guidance, promoting performances and new works, and assisting your clients to maintain their professional image. Some talent managers also manage their client’s finances by collecting fees, reporting income, and keeping accurate financial records. You most likely have several clients at once in this field.

What is a talent manager?

A Talent Manager is a professional who represents and guides artists, entertainers, athletes, or other talents in their careers. They help clients find opportunities, negotiate contracts, and make strategic decisions to enhance their careers. Talent Managers often handle scheduling, public relations, and networking, ensuring their clients reach their full potential. Their role is different from that of an agent, as they focus on long-term career development rather than just securing individual jobs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a talent manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Talent Manager, you need expertise in recruitment, talent development, and workforce planning, often supported by a degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), HR information systems (HRIS), and certifications like SHRM or HRCI are highly beneficial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and negotiation abilities help Talent Managers build trust and foster strong relationships. These skills ensure effective talent acquisition and retention, driving organizational success through a skilled and engaged workforce.

What are some common challenges talent managers face when balancing client needs with organizational goals?

Talent Managers often navigate the delicate balance between advocating for their clients' best interests and aligning with the strategic objectives of their organization or agency. This can involve negotiating contracts, managing expectations, and ensuring that both parties' goals are met. Clear communication, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to problem-solve under pressure are essential for success in this role. Additionally, Talent Managers frequently collaborate with legal, marketing, and project teams to ensure seamless service delivery while maintaining positive client relationships.

What is the difference between Talent Manager vs Recruiter?

AspectTalent Manager

While both roles focus on staffing and workforce development, a Talent Manager oversees the entire talent lifecycle, including employee development, retention, and succession planning. A Recruiter primarily focuses on sourcing, screening, and hiring candidates for specific roles. Talent Managers often work closely with HR and leadership to align talent strategies with business goals, whereas Recruiters concentrate on filling immediate vacancies.

What degree do you need to be a talent manager?

A talent manager typically does not require a specific degree, but many have a bachelor's degree in fields such as business, marketing, communications, or entertainment management. Relevant skills include strong interpersonal, negotiation, and organizational abilities, and some may pursue certifications in talent management or related areas to enhance their credentials.

Are you obsessed with data, partner success, taking action, and changing the game? If you have a whole lot of hustle and a touch of nerd, come work with Pattern! We want you to use your skills to push one of the fastest-growing companies in the US to the top of the list.
Pattern accelerates brands on global ecommerce marketplaces leveraging proprietary technology and AI. Utilizing more than 66 trillion data points, sophisticated machine learning and AI models, Pattern optimizes and automates all levers of ecommerce growth for global brands, including advertising, content management, logistics and fulfillment, pricing, forecasting and customer service. Hundreds of global brands depend on Pattern's ecommerce acceleration platform every day to drive profitable revenue growth across 60+ global marketplaces-including Amazon, Walmart.com, Target.com, eBay, Tmall, TikTok Shop, JD, and Mercado Libre. To learn more, visit pattern.com or email [email protected].
Pattern has been named one of the fastest growing tech companies headquartered in North America by Deloitte and one of best-led companies by Inc. We place employee experience at the center of our business model and have been recognized as one of Newsweek's Global Most Loved Workplaces®.
We are looking for a Senior Talent Acquisition Partner to serve in a contract role and be an integral member of the Pattern business during that time. We're looking for a strategic and analytical individual who can create strong relationships with hiring managers and candidates in order to bring world class talent to Pattern.
This is a full-time contractor position to cover maternity leave. The contract will be from August 2026 - December 31st, 2026. There will be potential for conversion to a full-time permanent role, subject to performance and business needs.
What is a day in the life of a Senior Talent Acquisition Partner?
  • Lead end-to-end recruiting for multiple teams at Pattern, serving as the go-to talent partner for leaders across these teams
  • Partner closely with hiring managers to develop and execute strategic recruitment plans tailored to each role
  • Own the full-cycle recruiting process: define role requirements, post job openings, proactively source candidates, review applications, conduct interviews, extend and negotiate offers, and close hires
  • Source top-tier talent through LinkedIn, job boards, networking events, university partnerships, career fairs, and other creative channels
  • Strengthen Pattern's employer brand through consistent representation on platforms like Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and social media
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date candidate records in the Applicant Tracking System (Lever) throughout the hiring lifecycle
  • Manage and mentor a Talent Acquisition Coordinator, providing coaching and training on recruiting best practices
  • Champion an exceptional candidate and hiring manager experience, ensuring a thoughtful, timely, and inclusive process from start to finish

What will I need to thrive in this role?
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years of full-cycle recruiting experience, ideally in a fast-paced or high-growth environment
  • Deep understanding of recruiting best practices, tools, and sourcing strategies
  • Proven ability to assess talent and match candidates to complex role requirements across diverse functions
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
  • Highly organized, with strong time management skills and attention to detail
  • Strategic thinker with sound analytical judgment and decision-making ability
  • Skilled in conducting interviews using a variety of techniques (behavioral, technical, structured, etc.)
  • Adept at building and maintaining long-term relationships with candidates, hiring managers, and industry professionals

What does high performance look like?
  • Proactively partners with hiring managers to drive alignment, urgency, and results-earning trust as a strategic advisor, not just a recruiter
  • Consistently delivers high-quality candidates in a timely manner, with strong conversion rates from screen to hire
  • Maintains clean, complete data in the ATS and leverages insights to optimize pipeline strategy and hiring outcomes
  • Continuously raises the bar by improving processes, enhancing candidate experience, and helping hiring teams become better interviewers and decision-makers

What does success look like in the first 30, 60, 90 days?
First 30 Days
You'll focus on getting deeply familiar with Pattern's people, processes, and priorities. This includes onboarding to our culture, tools (like Lever), and hiring workflows. You'll shadow interviews, learn how the orgs you are assigned to operate, and begin building relationships with your hiring managers and key partners. You'll also review and open roles, hiring plans, and pipeline activity to get up to speed on current needs and begin recruiting for your roles independently.
By 60 Days
You're fully embedded in the recruiting process and driving open searches independently. You're building strong, trust-based partnerships with hiring managers, regularly sourcing and submitting candidates, and facilitating a smooth, structured interview process. You'll begin contributing ideas to improve our recruiting operations-whether that's updating scorecards, refining our outreach strategy, or streamlining how we engage candidates.
By 90 Days
You're viewed as a trusted advisor and owner of all things talent across your client groups. You're filling roles efficiently with great candidate and hiring manager experience, proactively advising on talent strategy, and helping shape how we scale tech and product hiring. What is my potential for career growth?
  • Potential consideration for future recruiting opportunities at Pattern based on business needs and performance
  • Opportunity to expand leadership experience by managing a Talent Acquisition Coordinator
  • Exposure to executive-level hiring strategy, managing a hiring vertical from the top to the bottom
  • Opportunity to broaden expertise across multiple business functions

You will be mentored by, and report into the Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition and meet with them on a regular basis to discuss your performance. You will work on a team of other Senior Talent Acquisition Partners and manage your own Talent Acquisition Coordinator.
