Job Description Summary

About URI: The University of Rhode Island enrolls approximately 17,000 students across its graduate and undergraduate programs and is the State's flagship public research university, as well as the land grant and sea grant university, for the state of Rhode Island. The main campus is located in the historic village of Kingston, and the Bay Campus is located in Narragansett. Both campuses are near major beaches in a beautiful coastal community. URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships through appreciative advising. Assist the student in optimizing their educational experience, support retention, and progress towards on-time graduation. Provide academic advising on an individual and group basis for students in Talent Development. Ensure that Talent Development students' progress toward graduation in a timely and systematic way.
Duties and Responsibilities
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide academic advisement for Talent Development students through appreciative advising.
Conduct weekly individual and group meetings with Talent Development students.
Conduct Progress Check Point evaluations with Talent Development students.
Assist in the development/coordination of support services such as those that support transition, first year experience, and retention.
Maintain confidential records, reports, and documentation regarding Talent Development students.
Maintain a network of contacts and resources.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of resources that support student success such as financial aid.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of University policies and procedures that support and assist in retaining students.
Assist in the coordination and update the Talent Development History book.
Represent Talent Development on various University committees.
Participate in scholastic standing review as needed.
Assist with parent and family engagement.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with Social Media accounts i.e., Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and Tik Tok.
Assist/market all of the program's special events such as seminars and conferences, as they relate to student leadership development and peer mentoring.
Work evenings and weekends, when necessary.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal and university issued computers, printers, database management and spreadsheet software.
Required Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor's degree.
2. Minimum of three years of combined experience in two or more of the following: recruiting and/or advising in an academic program setting, coordinating programs, or working in a Title IV grant program.
3. School-based experience and/or community work experience.
4. Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
5. Proficiency in written communication skills.
6. Program planning experience.
7. Computer skills.
8. Willingness to travel.
9. Ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED:
1. Master's Degree.
2. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
3. Bilingual proficiency (spoken and written).
4. Academic advising experience gained while pursuing a graduate program.
5. Academic advising experience, including experience obtained while enrolled in a graduate degree program
6. Collaborative work style;.
7. Ability to use Google Suite (or similar platform).
8. Ability to use Brightspace (or similar platform), presentation technology and student records systems (preferably Peoplesoft).
9. Experience with Starfish.
10. Ability to use Microsoft 365.
