Job description

SEIU (Service Employees International Union)
JOB TITLE: Talent Acquisition Manager
GRADE: MGT D
ANNUAL SALARY: $108,104
LOCATION: Washington, DC (Headquarters)
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:
We are the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a union of about 2 million diverse members in healthcare, the public sector, and property services. We believe in and fight for our vision for a just society: where all workers are valued and all people respected-no matter where we come from or what color we are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come. We are an anti-racist organization determined to check corporate power and uproot structural racism through unions - worker power and collective action - and government - legislative and political action. We fight for unions for all and a government that works for all so that all of us, across race and place, can have power together in unions and participate fully in our democracy.
PURPOSE:
The Talent Acquisition Manager will play a critical role in advancing SEIU's mission by designing and executing bold, equity-centered hiring strategies that bring diverse and values-driven professionals into the labor movement. This is not a traditional HR role; it's an opportunity for someone who understands the power of people, values the role of organized labor, and knows how to build strong, representative teams. Whether you've led community campaigns, recruited talent for political or nonprofit work, or built coalitions, you may have the strategic thinking and relationship skills to thrive here.
This position leads inclusive and equity-focused recruitment efforts to attract top-tier professionals passionate about making a difference. Responsibilities include full life-cycle recruitment: writing job descriptions, sourcing, interviewing, and negotiating offers. The Talent Acquisition Manager will partner closely with leadership to ensure we build a workforce that reflects our values and commitment to justice, equity, and advocacy.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Help lead full-cycle recruitment efforts, including job posting, sourcing, prescreening, interviewing (virtual and in-person), reference and background checks, compensation analysis, and offer negotiation.
  • Develop and execute strategic, inclusive, and innovative talent acquisition initiatives to attract and retain high-impact talent, ensuring alignment with organizational needs and workforce planning.
  • Partner with hiring managers to assess talent needs, develop hiring strategies, and provide guidance on candidate selection.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with mission-aligned talent pools, including campaign staff, community organizers, advocacy leaders, and movement builders.
  • Enhance employer branding efforts by promoting SEIU's mission and values across hiring platforms, leveraging social media and other networks to attract top candidates.
  • Foster a diverse and equitable hiring process by designing job postings and outreach efforts that cultivate inclusive applicant pools.
  • Maintain a positive candidate experience by ensuring transparent communication, timely follow-ups, and a seamless selection process.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to align talent acquisition efforts with long-term workforce planning and development strategies.
  • Act as a strategic partner to hiring teams, helping them make values-aligned, equitable hiring decisions and rethink traditional recruitment norms.
CONTACTS:
This role interacts with SEIU managers and staff, SEIU local unions and affiliates, vendors, contractors, community groups, colleges and universities, other unions, and federal and state agencies to support strategic recruitment efforts.
DIRECTION & DECISION MAKING:
This position reports to the Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition or their designee.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the role. A bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field is preferred but not required. Candidates with at least four (4) years of relevant experience in talent acquisition, workforce strategy, or recruitment in mission-driven organizations, labor unions, or non-profits are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • A combination of education and experience that demonstrates expertise in talent acquisition and recruitment strategy. A bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with labor unions or non-profits is a plus; we value professionals who understand mission-driven work and are committed to equity and workforce advocacy.
  • We strongly encourage individuals with organizing experience to apply. Whether from labor, political, or community campaigns, your background in building teams, managing people-centric strategies, and moving work with a purpose brings valuable and transferable skills to this role. Experience navigating complex institutions, aligning people with missions, and working in high-pressure environments will serve you well here.
  • Thorough understanding of human resources practices and principles, with a deep knowledge of full life-cycle recruiting and the creation of talent pipelines.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing workforce needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage candidates, hiring managers, and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Unwavering commitment to confidentiality and discretion, ensuring sensitive information is handled with the highest level of integrity.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, HRIS, and recruitment technology (such as UltiPro) to optimize the hiring process.
  • HR or Talent Acquisition certification preferred-but not required. We're looking for someone with the drive, expertise, and passion to lead transformative hiring initiatives.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is mainly based in an office environment, though some tasks may require working in different settings to fulfill job responsibilities. Frequent travel may be necessary during peak recruitment seasons, including overnight trips. Additionally, this role may involve long and extended hours.
