Job description

Principal Systems Engineer

The Boeing Company has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Systems Engineer to join our team located in North Charleston, SC.

The Engineering Operations (EngOps) Organization within 787 Airplane Level Integration Team (ALIT) is seeking a highly experienced engineer to lead our growing Systems Engineering (SE) team in Charleston and drive implementation activities for SE across the 787 program. The position requires a candidate with a servant leadership mindset who communicates and collaborates well with others. They need to foster an environment that values diversity. This role will have an emphasis on mentoring/coaching teammates, establishing positive working relationships, and instilling a culture of engineering excellence and safety, and technical leadership.

The desired Systems Engineering candidate is a degreed engineer who will provide technical leadership, strategic vision, and systems engineering guidance for engineers across a variety of Integrated Product Teams (IPT) implementing design changes to 787 airplane systems. They will lead the development and implementation of SE initiatives to support 787 engineers in compliance with Boeing and industry standards. Candidates should have design or systems engineering background with experience on the 787 or a comparable commercial airplane program.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the facilitation of 787 Tier 0-2 Requirements Management Processes (New, Modified, and Deviations), enabling the progression of requirement change packages from initiation through implementation.

  • Advises design engineers in application of engineering judgement through active collaboration and coaching during the requirement change process to ensure evidence, traceability and impact analyses are collected. Provides oversight and feedback to engineers in support of high-quality requirements written in accordance with best practices.

  • Implements strategic initiatives to improve management of requirement change activity across the 787 program, and adherence to Boeing and industry standards. Communicates status, risks and schedule impacts to leadership and affected stakeholders.

  • Develops, implements and maintains process guidance for the program that ensures systems engineering can be executed consistently across design engineering teams and commodities.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, with travel not exceeding 10%.

Work Authorization Statement:

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at our North Charleston, SC location.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

  • 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Master's degree or advanced coursework in relevant engineering or systems engineering fields.

  • Prior role as a systems or design engineer on commercial transport aircraft, with knowledge of ARP4754A.

  • Proficiency with Systems Engineering tools such asDOORS,Cameo, Jira, or similar.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills to be able to comprehend and discuss technical content with diverse stakeholders.

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and applying systems thinking to resolve technically complex issues.

  • Knowledge of engineering change process and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Certification in systems engineering (e.g. INCOSE ASEP).
