What is a sustainability internship?

A Sustainability Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that focuses on supporting an organization’s efforts to improve its environmental, social, and economic impact. Interns may work on projects related to energy efficiency, waste reduction, sustainable supply chains, or community outreach. These roles provide hands-on experience in sustainability practices, research, and reporting, while helping organizations meet their sustainability goals. Interns also gain valuable skills and insights into the growing field of sustainability, which can be useful for future careers.

What types of projects and collaborations can I expect during a sustainability internship?

As a Sustainability Intern, you’ll typically work on projects such as conducting research on environmental impact, assisting with sustainability reporting, and supporting initiatives to reduce an organization’s carbon footprint. You’ll often collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, facilities, and communications, to implement green practices and gather data. This role offers hands-on experience in both project management and teamwork, providing valuable exposure to sustainability strategies in a professional setting. Regular meetings and mentorship from experienced sustainability professionals are also common, helping you build relevant skills and industry connections.

To thrive as a Sustainability Intern, you need a background in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field, along with strong research and analytical skills.
