How does a sustainability counsel typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Sustainability Counsel works closely with teams such as Environmental Health & Safety, Compliance, Operations, and Corporate Social Responsibility to ensure that sustainability initiatives align with legal requirements and organizational goals. They often participate in cross-functional meetings, provide guidance on regulatory risks, and help develop policies that promote environmental responsibility. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as the role frequently involves educating staff on sustainability regulations and supporting project teams in implementing eco-friendly practices. This collaborative approach helps ensure the organization’s sustainability strategy is both legally sound and operationally feasible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sustainability counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustainability Counsel, you need expertise in environmental law, corporate compliance, and sustainability practices, typically supported by a JD degree and bar admission. Familiarity with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) frameworks, regulatory databases, and sustainability reporting tools is essential. Strong negotiation, analytical thinking, and communication skills help you advise stakeholders and manage complex legal issues. These skills ensure organizations can navigate regulatory challenges while advancing responsible, sustainable business strategies.
