Senior Underwriting Assistant

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Underwriting Assistant based in United States.

This role supports underwriting operations within a growing excess and surplus lines insurance business serving complex, hard-to-place risks. You will work closely with underwriting, compliance, and operations teams to ensure submissions, renewals, endorsements, and policy documentation are processed accurately and efficiently. The position plays an important role in maintaining high-quality underwriting data, organized policy records, and strong broker relationships. You will also help coordinate compliance checks, renewal activity, cancellations, inspections, and premium audits across assigned accounts. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, sound organizational skills, and the ability to work confidently with insurance documentation and systems. You will join a collaborative environment where initiative, continuous improvement, and professional development are encouraged. The role is based in Richmond, Virginia, with hybrid flexibility and consideration for qualified candidates located elsewhere in the United States.

Accountabilities
  • Partner with underwriting teams to enter new business, submissions, renewals, premium transactions, and non-premium-bearing endorsements into underwriting systems in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Generate and issue accurate policy documentation while following underwriting procedures and applicable requirements.
  • Order inspections and premium audits when required and ensure related activities are properly tracked.
  • Verify that active brokers have completed required compliance checks and maintain accurate broker information in underwriting systems in line with business agreements.
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive electronic policy files, ensuring documentation is complete, organized, and readily accessible.
  • Support the processing of cancellation activity, including non-renewals, non-payment cancellations, and related transactions.
  • Manage renewal solicitation processes for applicable products, ensuring required renewal information reaches underwriters ahead of renewal dates.
  • Monitor relevant reports and data to identify discrepancies and maintain accurate underwriting activity information.
  • Work with underwriting and compliance teams to maintain and update product-specific forms libraries.
  • Provide operational support to the Operations Manager and other internal stakeholders as required.
  • Assist with onboarding and training other team members, sharing knowledge of processes, systems, and underwriting procedures.
  • Ensure all activities are performed with integrity and in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements, supervisory standards, and market conduct expectations.
  • Contribute to operational and business improvement projects and take on additional assignments as needed.
Requirements
  • Proven administrative or operational support experience within the insurance industry, preferably in an underwriting environment.
  • Understanding of insurance contractual documentation and the ability to accurately process materials issued by underwriters.
  • Exposure to excess and surplus lines insurance is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products and confidence working with digital documentation and data.
  • Ability to quickly learn new software, underwriting platforms, and operational systems.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to processing policy and underwriting information.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with brokers and internal stakeholders.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to resolving operational issues.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to contribute positively within a growing team.
  • Results-oriented approach combined with a growth mindset and willingness to continuously improve processes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to integrity, due care, diligence, customer fairness, and appropriate standards of market conduct.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment in Richmond, Virginia, or remotely within the United States where appropriate.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary.
  • Annual performance-based target bonus.
  • Hybrid working arrangement, with remote flexibility considered for appropriately qualified U.S.-based candidates.
  • Matching 401(k) plan.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Generous paid time off, including parental leave.
  • Continued professional development and learning support.
  • Gym subsidy.
  • Additional personal days for interests, wellness, or charitable activities.
  • Collaborative and entrepreneurial working environment.
  • Opportunities to contribute to a growing E&S insurance business and expand knowledge across specialty insurance operations.
