A support coordinator works with health care facilities and government agencies to help patients get the health benefits or services they need. As a support coordinator, you meet with clients and their families to determine what services they need. You check their insurance benefits to confirm eligibility and develop an individualized plan to provide the resources they need for treatment or to improve their quality of life. Those working for private health care companies may coordinate the specific services offered by the organization, scheduling treatments and follow-up appointments. Support coordinators who work for social service agencies may focus on insurance eligibility and getting approval for patient treatments and care.

What are some common challenges support coordinators face when managing multiple client cases simultaneously?

Support Coordinators often manage a high volume of cases, each with unique client needs and varying levels of urgency. Balancing these demands requires strong organizational skills, effective prioritization, and clear communication with clients and service providers. Time management and staying up-to-date with documentation are essential to ensure no client's needs are overlooked. Regular team meetings and collaboration with colleagues can help address complex cases and share strategies for workload management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a support coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Support Coordinator, you need strong organizational abilities, case management experience, and typically a relevant qualification in social work, disability services, or community services. Familiarity with client management systems, documentation software, and knowledge of relevant legislation such as the NDIS is often required. Excellent communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help build trust and effectively support clients’ needs. These competencies ensure that clients receive coordinated, high-quality services tailored to their individual goals and circumstances.

Job description

Scholar Support Coordinator

KIPP Atlanta Schools is part of the KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) national network of free, open enrollment, college-preparatory schools dedicated to ensuring that every child grows up free to create the future they want for themselves and their communities. There are 280 KIPP schools in 21 states and the District of Columbia serving more than 175,000 scholars and alumni. KIPP Atlanta currently operates 11 schools including five primary schools, six middle schools and one high school, as well as KIPP Forward which supports scholars on their journey to a choice-filled life. We are a social justice organization and our vision and mission require the work of dedicated, bold and skilled leaders, educators, and support staff who are committed to serving as the catalyst for joyful, academically excellent schools and the foundation for building a more just and equitable world for our scholars.

The Scholar Support Coordinator (Special Education Coordinator / Case Manager) ensures high-quality, legally compliant special education services for scholars with disabilities by case-managing IEPs, coordinating required meetings and timelines, and supporting teachers to implement accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction (SDI). This role maintains an audit-ready compliance system at the school level and partners closely with the Assistant Principal, Scholar Support (who retains overall IDEA/504 accountability) to ensure strong outcomes, lawful processes, and positive family partnership.

Special Education Case Management & Compliance Execution - 45%

  • Owns case management for assigned scholars: schedules and facilitates IEP/eligibility/annual review meetings, ensures required team membership, and maintains compliant documentation. (IDEA evaluation timelines and procedural requirements apply.)
  • Ensures IEP implementation fidelity: service minutes, accommodations/modifications, SDI expectations, and related services are delivered as written; escalates service gaps immediately. (Case manager responsibility for IEP content/implementation is a common national expectation.)
  • Coordinates evaluation/reevaluation workflows (request → consent → evaluation completion) and tracks deadlines in alignment with federal IDEA and Georgia rules (including the 60-day evaluation clock and Georgia-specific rule language).
  • Supports Section 504 alignment by partnering with the AP Scholar Support for cases requiring 504 evaluation/reevaluation and documentation (including reevaluation prior to significant change of placement where applicable).
  • Maintains confidential student records and compliance artifacts (meeting notices, consents, logs, progress reports, accommodations communication) in an audit-ready format.

Instructional Support for Inclusive Practices - 25%

  • Supports teachers with implementation of IEP accommodations/modifications and inclusive instructional routines; ensures staff understand "what must happen daily" for each scholar on caseload.
  • Partners with instructional leaders and coaches to ensure scholars with disabilities have equitable access to grade-level tasks and assessments through appropriate scaffolds and SDI alignment.
  • Supports co-planning routines (Gen Ed + SPED) to translate IEP goals and supports into lesson-level execution.

Data, Progress Monitoring & Reporting - 20%

  • Tracks and reports scholar progress toward IEP goals using progress monitoring tools and multiple data sources; ensures progress reports are completed on required cadence and communicated appropriately.
  • Maintains a caseload dashboard for: annual review dates, eval/reeval dates, service minutes, accommodation implementation checks, progress monitoring status, and open compliance tasks.
  • Conducts periodic internal file reviews (spot audits) and corrects documentation issues proactively before monitoring/audits.

Family Partnership & Communication - 10%

  • Serves as a primary school point of contact for families of scholars on caseload, ensuring meetings are understandable, timely, and documented.
  • Ensures families receive required notices and procedural information and that team decisions are documented with clarity and respect.
  • Coordinates with families and school teams to address barriers impacting service access, engagement, and progress.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid Georgia educator certification in Special Education
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA-aligned case management practices, IEP development/implementation, and compliance timelines (IDEA + Georgia requirements).

Preferred:

  • Experience leading school-wide MTSS systems, including universal screening, intervention cycles, and progress monitoring; familiarity with Child Find referral considerations and 504/IDEA interfaces.
  • Special education endorsements or credentials
  • Experience leading in a K–8 or turnaround environment
  • Experience serving as a special education case manager or school-based special education lead/liaison
  • Strong data analysis, coaching, and change management skills

Compensation is competitive and aligned with KIPP Atlanta Schools' leadership salary bands. The salary range for this role is $60,000-$110,000 and is based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity. Most new hires are placed in the lower to mid-range of the salary range. Placement near the top of the range is uncommon at hire and reserved for individuals who exceed role qualifications through depth of expertise, leadership maturity, and proven results leading complex initiatives with sustained, organization-level impact. A comprehensive benefits package is offered, including health insurance, retirement options, paid time off, and professional development opportunities.

KIPP Atlanta Schools offers a competitive benefits package that includes:

  • 15 days of Paid Time Off, in addition to identified holidays
  • Comprehensive health insurance (medical and dental), life insurance and optional short and long term disability
  • Counseling and Telehealth Options
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Participation in Georgia retirement plan and an optional 403(b) retirement plan.

This position requires:

  • Regular presence in classrooms and in required meetings around the region
  • This role requires flexibility to support special education meetings, documentation timelines, and family engagement; occasional evening meetings may be required
  • Works under the direction of the Assistant Principal, Scholar Support, who retains compliance; this role ensures case management quality and school-lea supports compliant decision-making.
  • This position requires routine physical activity associated with normal office environments.
  • This position may require the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to engage in school-based activities requiring standing, walking, and mobility
