Job description

Position Title: Traffic Control Superintendent

Department: Traffic Control

Location: Athens, AL


Position Summary:

The Traffic Control Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all traffic control operations for construction projects. This role ensures safe and compliant traffic flow around job sites, supervises field crews, and maintains adherence to local, state, and federal regulations.


Key Responsibilities:

Project Planning & Coordination

  • Develop and implement traffic control plans for active job sites
  • Coordinate with project managers, contractors, and government agencies
  • Schedule traffic control crews, equipment, and materials
  • Review project specifications and ensure proper traffic setup prior to mobilization
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as required to support organizational goals.


Traffic Control Operations

  • Oversee installation, maintenance, and removal of traffic control devices
  • Ensure proper placement of signs, cones, barricades, and message boards
  • Monitor daily operations to maintain safe traffic flow and minimize disruptions
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans


Supervision & Leadership

  • Supervise traffic control crews, foremen, and subcontractors
  • Provide training on safety procedures, equipment use, and regulations
  • Conduct daily briefings and enforce company policies
  • Evaluate employee performance and provide coaching as needed


Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with MUTCD, OSHA, and state/local regulations
  • Enforce safety standards for both workers and the traveling public
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses
  • Maintain proper documentation of safety meetings and inspections

Client & Stakeholder Communication

  • Serve as primary point of contact for traffic-related project concerns
  • Communicate with DOT officials, inspectors, and law enforcement as needed
  • Provide updates on traffic control progress and issues
  • Address public concerns regarding traffic disruptions


Equipment & Inventory Management

  • Manage inventory of traffic control devices and materials
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance of equipment
  • Ensure proper utilization and storage of assets
  • Track usage and forecast future needs


Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • school diploma or GED required
  • 5+ years of experience in traffic control or roadway construction
  • 2+ years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred
  • Flagger certification required (or ability to obtain)
  • Knowledge of traffic control standards and regulations
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans and blueprints
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and extended hours as needed
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Travel between job sites required.
  • Must be physically able to stand, walk, sit, crouch, kneel, climb, and periodically lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to obtain FBI, NASA & Arsenal Badge
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on all job sites as required
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen
