What is a summer custodian?

Summer custodians are individuals hired, often temporarily, to help clean, maintain, and prepare facilities such as schools or universities during the summer break. Their responsibilities may include tasks like deep cleaning classrooms, waxing floors, moving furniture, and performing minor repairs. This work helps ensure that the building is in top condition for the start of the next school year. Summer custodians typically work under the supervision of a head custodian or facilities manager and may work alone or as part of a team.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a summer custodian, and how do they differ from year-round custodial roles?

As a Summer Custodian, your daily tasks often focus on deep cleaning, floor maintenance, and preparing facilities for the upcoming academic year, rather than the routine maintenance and cleaning that happens during the school year. You may work on projects like waxing floors, moving furniture, washing windows, and assisting with minor repairs. The pace can be more project-oriented, and you may collaborate closely with other custodians and maintenance staff to complete larger tasks efficiently. This role provides a great opportunity to gain facilities management experience and develop teamwork skills in a supportive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer custodian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Custodian, you need basic facility maintenance skills, physical stamina, and attention to detail, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and safety protocols is usually required. Dependability, time management, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure facilities are kept clean, safe, and well-maintained during busy summer periods.
