What is a summer credit analyst?

Summer Credit Analysts are interns or temporary employees, typically students, who work at financial institutions during the summer to analyze the creditworthiness of individuals, companies, or securities. Their main responsibilities include conducting financial statement analysis, assessing risk, preparing credit reports, and supporting senior analysts with research. This role provides hands-on experience in credit analysis and the broader field of finance, often serving as a pathway to full-time analyst positions after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a summer credit analyst expect during their internship?

As a Summer Credit Analyst, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks, including analyzing financial statements, conducting industry research, and assisting in preparing credit reports for new and existing clients. You'll often collaborate closely with senior analysts and relationship managers to evaluate credit risk and support lending decisions. The role typically involves both independent analysis and teamwork, offering valuable exposure to real-world credit evaluation processes. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build analytical skills and gain insights into the credit approval workflow within a financial institution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer credit analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Credit Analyst, you need a solid understanding of financial statements, credit risk analysis, and basic accounting principles, often supported by coursework in finance or economics. Familiarity with financial modeling tools like Excel, and sometimes exposure to platforms such as Bloomberg Terminal, is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate credit evaluations, risk mitigation, and clear reporting, all critical for supporting lending decisions and maintaining portfolio quality.

Are summer credit analysts in demand?

Summer credit analysts are in steady demand as financial institutions and corporations seek interns with strong analytical skills and knowledge of credit risk assessment. These roles often serve as a pathway to full-time positions, and demand can increase during economic growth periods when lending activity rises.

How to become a summer credit analyst with no experience?

To become a summer credit analyst with no experience, focus on developing relevant skills such as financial analysis, Excel proficiency, and understanding credit reports. Pursuing a related degree in finance, economics, or accounting and gaining internship experience can improve your chances of securing an entry-level position. Demonstrating strong analytical abilities and attention to detail is also beneficial during the application process.

Job description

Summer Analyst

As a Summer Analyst on Susquehanna's Credit Research team, you will be partnered with our senior analysts and traders to assist in identifying investment opportunities in the credit and bond markets. You will learn to perform in-depth company analysis and provide opinions on how a company's credit profile might change with new information. Through collaboration with our Credit, Equity, and Macro Analysts, and Fixed Income, ETF, and Derivatives Traders, you will gain experience in the financial markets by tracking company news and events and assisting with valuation work.

Our ten-week summer internship program introduces you to our unique approach to research through practical experience on a credit-focused team and through education in a classroom setting.

What We're Looking For
  • Intention to graduate with a bachelor's or master's degree and begin full time employment by August 2028
  • Strong written, analytical, and financial research skills
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Prior exposure to fundamental company research preferred
  • Demonstrated interest in the financial markets
  • Familiarity with a trading environment and derivative products preferred
  • Visa sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position now or in the future
What's In It For You
  • Our non-hierarchical culture allows employees of every level to thrive and make impact. We are not your typical trading firm โ€“ the environment is casual, collaborative and we focus on continuous development.
  • Housing provided for duration of internship
  • Relaxed dress code: jeans and sneakers are the norm, shorts all summer long
  • Fully stocked kitchens for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and beverages
  • A forty thousand square-foot state of the art fitness facility with brand-new equipment, multi-purpose courts, group exercise classes, and locker room spaces
  • Discounts for dining, entertainment, shopping, travel, and attractions
  • Social events including a poker tournament, dinners, and sporting events in Philadelphia
  • On-site Wellness Center
  • On-site services such as a mailroom, barber, dry cleaning, and car maintenance
  • Opportunities to give back to the community through Susquehanna sponsored events and donation drives
