What is a summer couple?

A summer couple is typically a pair, often married or in a long-term relationship, who are hired to work together during the summer season, usually at vacation properties, resorts, or private estates. Their duties can include housekeeping, cooking, gardening, maintenance, and sometimes childcare or guest services, depending on the employer's needs. This role is popular among couples seeking seasonal employment with accommodation included, providing an opportunity to work and live together in a new environment. Summer couples are valued for their teamwork and ability to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently.

What are the common responsibilities and expectations for a summer couple working at a private estate or hospitality venue?

As a Summer Couple, you and your partner will typically share a range of responsibilities, which may include property maintenance, housekeeping, gardening, cooking, and guest services. Employers often value flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. You may be expected to coordinate closely with each other and occasionally with other staff to ensure smooth daily operations. The role can be demanding, especially during peak seasons, but it offers valuable experience in hospitality and property management, and can pave the way for advancement into year-round or managerial positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer couple, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Couple, you generally need strong teamwork abilities, hands-on experience in hospitality, maintenance, or caretaking, and a willingness to take on a variety of roles. Familiarity with property management systems, cleaning equipment, gardening tools, and possibly a valid driving license are commonly required. Excellent communication, flexibility, and problem-solving skills help couples adapt to guest needs and changing environments. These skills ensure smooth operation of seasonal properties, high guest satisfaction, and a positive work experience for both employers and employees.

Job description

A smart, gracious elderly couple is seeking an experienced, personable, and capable domestic couple to assist with the care and management of their 4,000–5,000 sq. ft. home in Tucson, Arizona, starting mid-September/ early October. The position is initially offered on a three-month temporary basis, with the intention of becoming permanent for the right couple. The principals are highly intelligent, warm, active, and engaging. They are not seeking caregivers; rather, they need a reliable team to provide thoughtful household support, including cleaning, laundry, general home maintenance, pool care, transportation, grocery management, and food preparation.

The ideal candidates will be mature, capable, self-directed, and genuinely enjoyable to have around—people who naturally notice what needs to be done and take initiative, whether that means organizing the pantry, tending the roses, putting away groceries, refreshing the house, driving the car, or preparing dinner. Above all, they should be trustworthy, attentive, and able to make day-to-day life run smoothly.

This is an especially appealing opportunity for an experienced domestic couple who may have previously worked on a larger estate or managed a busy household and are now looking for a more relaxed and sustainable position. The couple will have their own private two-bedroom home on a golf course approximately two miles from the principals’ residence, providing privacy while remaining conveniently close for daily responsibilities.

The schedule is expected to average approximately four hours per day per person, with 40 combined hours guaranteed each week. The schedule will have some flexibility depending on household needs, entertaining, projects, and seasonal activities.

The family would also appreciate flexibility for occasional summer travel to Colorado, where the extended family spends part of the summer. Details regarding the summer schedule and accommodation in Colorado would be discussed separately.

The principals have recently moved from a smaller property into an expansive Southwestern-style residence that is elegant and formal. Their family is highly involved and lives nearby, including a son in the same community, so the successful couple will become part of an established family support network rather than being solely responsible for the principals.

The overarching goal is simple: to provide the household assistance needed for the principals to continue living comfortably, independently, and happily in their home.

Candidates may bring their own well-behaved cats or dogs.

Household Management

Maintain the principals' formal yet comfortable home to a very high standard.

General cleaning and upkeep of the approximately 4,000–5,000 sq. ft. residence.

Laundry, ironing, pressing linens, and wardrobe care.

Careful handling of fine furniture, antiques, and specialty household items.

Maintain and organize closets, cabinets, pantry, and storage areas.

Periodically review household supplies and remove expired or unnecessary items.

Keep the home fresh, orderly, and beautifully presented.

Identify household issues before they become problems.

Assist with small household projects such as touch-up painting, removing cobwebs, organizing spaces, and general upkeep.

Cooking & Entertaining

Prepare approximately one simple, fresh meal per day for the principals, generally lunch (healthy, straightforward meals including soups, salads, vegetables, and proteins)

Work collaboratively with the lady of the house on menus and ideas when entertaining.

Assist with more elaborate meals and gatherings when requested.

Set and clear beautiful tables and help prepare the home for entertaining.

Assist with golf groups, dinners, and other social occasions hosted at the residence.

The lady of the house is an excellent cook and enjoys entertaining; she would appreciate someone who can work alongside her and eventually take over some of the preparation.

Driving & Errands

Drive the principals to appointments, shopping, social engagements, golf, and other activities.

Grocery shopping and household errands.

Pick up and put away groceries and household supplies.

Assist with occasional longer-distance drives and travel.

Vehicles are provided, including a Tesla and Lexus.

Help make transportation easier and more comfortable for the principals while allowing them to remain independent.

Property & Outdoor Maintenance

Assist with the general upkeep of the grounds.

Pruning, watering, rose care, vegetable garden maintenance, and seasonal outdoor projects.

Monitor fountains and other exterior features.

Assist with painting, staining, and small maintenance projects.

Coordinate with existing landscaping and maintenance resources.

The current landscaping professional is an excellent resource and will remain involved. He knows the property's unique Southwestern landscaping and will help train the new couple on the plants and their specific requirements.

Household Organization & Projects

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys being proactive.

The ideal couple will naturally notice what needs to be done and take initiative rather than waiting for instructions. Projects may include:

Organizing and refreshing closets.

Cleaning and reorganizing cabinets and pantries.

Managing household inventories.

Identifying items that need repair, replacement, or attention.

Caring for specialty furnishings and antiques.

Keeping rarely used areas of the home clean and fresh.

Coordinating household maintenance.

Helping the principals stay on top of paperwork and everyday administrative tasks.

Providing light technology assistance, such as helping with online bills or household accounts.

Pet Care

The family has a beloved, medium-sized Bernedoodle who is extremely attached to the principals, particularly the lady of the house. The couple should be comfortable around dogs and willing to assist with basic pet-related needs.

The principals would especially value a couple who has experience managing a large home or estate and understands the standards of private service, but who is now looking for a more intimate household and a less demanding pace.

Golf experience or an interest in golf would be a plus, as golf is an important part of the family's social life and community. Most importantly, the couple should be warm, conversational, discreet, humorous, and naturally attentive.

The principals are exceptionally kind people and are looking for a couple who will become a trusted part of their household and community.

  • Private two-bedroom residence on a golf course approximately two miles from the principals' home
  • Approximately 40 hours per week combined
  • 20 hours per week guaranteed for each person
