Overview
What Does Steel Dynamics Do?
Steel Dynamics is a leading industrial metals solutions company that produces lower-carbon, high-quality steel products primarily from recycled scrap. Operating through a circular manufacturing model, the company manufactures a wide range of steel products including flat roll, structural, and long products for industries such as construction, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. In addition to steel production, Steel Dynamics operates metals recycling facilities, steel fabrication plants, and aluminum production operations, serving customers across North America with a focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.
What Makes This Internship Different?
What sets this Data Analytics Internship apart is the opportunity to directly support business intelligence development for one of the company's largest recycling divisions. The intern will help design and automate interactive dashboards and data tools that provide real-time insights into divisional performance, sales, and marketing metrics. Rather than working with simulated or academic data, interns will work with live reports from our new ERP system being implemented in February 2026, giving them hands-on exposure to large-scale data migration and analytics integration. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to work cross-functionally with leadership in operations, marketing, and IT, building end-to-end reporting solutions that drive business decisions.
Internship Location
This internship will be based at the Steel Dynamics OmniSource Texas Division. The selected intern will work on-site at our Dayton, TX location. The internship will take place during Summer 2026 (approximately May-August).
Internship Benefits
  • Furnished Housing Free of Cost
    • Provided for interns living more than 50 miles from their work site, including essential furnishings to ensure a comfortable stay during the internship.
  • 401(k) & Company Match
    • Eligibility to participate in the company 401(k) plan with a 10-50% company match that vests immediately.
  • Employee Discounts
    • Access to discounts on hotels, vehicles, and other goods and services through Steel Dynamics' nationwide partner network.
  • Employee Assistance Program
    • Up to five free visits per issue, per year for counseling, legal advice, financial guidance, and other daily living resources.
  • Intern Extravaganza
    • A two-day event at company headquarters featuring facility tours, networking with company leaders, cultural immersion, and connecting with other interns from across the country.
  • Competitive Pay
    • Competitive hourly wages for all internship positions, rewarding the value interns bring to the company.

Responsibilities
What Are My Responsibilities as a Data Analytics Intern at Steel Dynamics?
  • Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards and shared Excel tools that provide real-time visibility into divisional sales, marketing, and operational performance.
  • Automate reporting processes by linking data from the new ERP system and other internal reports into dynamic dashboards.
  • Support data cleansing, transformation, and modeling efforts to ensure accuracy and consistency across multiple data sources.
  • Collaborate with divisional leadership to identify key performance metrics (KPIs) and develop visual analytics that improve decision-making.
  • Build reports tracking customer sales activity, pricing trends, logistics performance, and marketing campaigns.
  • Document and standardize recurring analytics processes to improve reporting efficiency and sustainability.
  • Participate in special projects related to ERP data integration, report validation, and business process optimization.
  • Present findings and progress updates to divisional management, highlighting opportunities for performance improvement.

Qualifications
What Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, Power Query) and Power BI preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, and proactive in finding data-driven solutions.

Preferred
  • Experience with Power BI, Qlik Sense, or Tableau.
  • Familiarity with SQL, DAX, or VBA for automating and connecting datasets.
  • Interest in industrial operations, pricing analytics, or manufacturing environments.

Founded in Fort Wayne, IN in 1943, OmniSource, LLC has grown to become one of North America’s largest processors, distributors, and managers of scrap and secondary metals. We collect, process, and resell a wide variety of scrap metal. The company ships over 5 million gross tons of recycled steel and 1 billion pounds of nonferrous and stainless-steel scrap annually. Our primary collection and processing facilities are concentrated in the Midwest, the South, and the Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. We expect to continue to expand OmniSource’s footprint, deploying our processing assets to cover new geographical territories, opening new facilities, and making targeted acquisitions. Supplementing our company-operated scrap collection sites, we also acquire metals from industrial scrap generators with which we have established strategic partnerships. We have designed and installed customized metals-recycling programs, some of which we manage and operate, for manufacturing companies nationwide.
