Job description

What Your Job Will Be Like
Sandia's Environments Engineering Department is seeking a Technical Library Intern to help organize, curate, and improve accessibility of historical test data and related technical records. This role supports engineering teams that analyze this information for design purposes. You will work with engineers and technical librarians to inventory legacy datasets, standardize metadata, and enable efficient retrieval and reuse of test results.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Assist with inventory and organize historical test artifacts (digital files and, when applicable, paper records) including test plans, run logs, sensor/diagnostic outputs, calibration records, photos/video, and summary reports.
  • Perform the extraction and cataloging of test metadata (e.g., test dates, conditions, configurations).
  • Maintain a searchable index (spreadsheets or databases) that links datasets to supporting documentation.
  • Perform basic data quality checks (file completeness, naming conventions, corrupted files, missing context) and flag gaps for follow-up with subject matter experts.

Salary Range
At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance, DOE Q clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire
  • Enrollment in an accredited program leading to a M.S. in Library & Information Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with common data/document tools (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets, or similar) and file organization.
  • Experience with data curation, records management, digital libraries, or archival workflows.
  • Experience with scripting or automation for organization tasks (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash).
  • Familiarity with document version control, data asset management, or database concepts.
  • Familiarity working with technical data types such as time series, or instrument logs.
  • Interest in test environments and interpreting engineering documentation.

The Env. Eng. & Integration Department is in the Solid Mechanics and Structural Dynamics Group of the Engineering Sciences Center. The department is responsible for leading integration of complex environmental test operations with computational simulation activities in structural dynamics and solid mechanics supporting fundamental research, model validation, development, qualification and acceptance for nuclear weapons, satellites, national missile defense, and other applications. In addition to planning and integration activities, the department directly supports several experimental capabilities, including: centrifuge, thermal conditioning, humidity, altitude, and corrosive atmosphere capabilities.

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
