Job description

What Your Job Will Be Like
We are a data driven explosive sciences group looking to optimize experimental design and data processing of large 2D and 3D data sets. As such we are looking for an undergraduate intern passionate for the fields of mathematics and statistical modeling to help us advance our capabilities. Research activities this position will support include: experimental design optimization using stochastic probabilistic modeling, processing computed tomography (CT) reconstructions consisting of large 3D and 4D matrix data sets, processing large 2D SEM image sets, and collation/processing of large 2D/3D data sets on vastly disparate time scales.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Perform hands-on laboratory activities and experiments
  • Design and assembly mechanical and scientific apparatus
  • Process large data sets
  • Create custom data models

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.
Salary Range
At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
Qualifications We Desire
  • Mathematics or statistical focused degree program
  • Experienced with design, engineering, and assembly of mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with stochastic probability modeling
  • Familiarity with programming in python and/or MATLAB
  • Familiarity and experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Able to work onsite at SNL/NM at least 3 months out of the year
