Sub Manager information

What is a sub manager?

Sub Managers, short for Substitute Managers, are professionals who temporarily take on the managerial role in a business, school, or organization when the regular manager is absent. Their responsibilities typically include overseeing daily operations, managing staff, ensuring policies and procedures are followed, and addressing any immediate issues that arise. Sub Managers must quickly adapt to different environments and leadership styles, maintaining continuity and stability during transitions. They are vital in ensuring that operations run smoothly without interruption when the primary manager is unavailable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sub manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sub Manager, you typically need experience in team leadership, operational management, and a relevant educational background in business or management. Familiarity with scheduling software, point-of-sale systems, and inventory management tools is often required. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to motivate staff are essential soft skills in this position. These abilities ensure smooth daily operations, high team performance, and excellent customer service within a retail or service environment.

What are some common challenges faced by a sub manager and how can they be addressed?

Sub Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing team workloads, resolving conflicts among staff, and ensuring operational consistency during managerial absences. Effective delegation, clear communication, and proactive problem-solving are key to addressing these issues. Building strong relationships with both team members and upper management helps facilitate smoother transitions and maintain productivity. Regular training and staying updated with organizational policies also enable Sub Managers to handle unexpected situations more efficiently.

Job description

About the Company:

Our client is a family-owned, locally based property restoration and reconstruction company serving the West Michigan area. They help homeowners and businesses recover from water, fire, mold, and storm damage — offering 24/7 emergency response, remediation, and full reconstruction services from first call to final walkthrough. They take pride in treating every property like their own, and they're growing their reconstruction/rebuild division, which is where this role comes in.

Role Summary

They're looking to bring on an in-house "General Contractor". This person will bridge the gap between overseeing multi-crew projects and handling smaller, hands-on work internally, helping us save on subcontracting costs and keep operations running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project & Sub Management: Run multiple job sites simultaneously, manage internal and external crews, and leverage both company subs and personal trade connections as needed.
  • Hands-On Carpentry & Repairs: Personally handle smaller interior scope — door installs, trim work, cabinet hanging, minor drywall patches — without needing to sub it out.
  • Property Repair & Claims-Based Work: Oversee projects tied to property damage repair, including navigating the requirements and documentation involved in claims-backed jobs.

Key Qualifications & Preferences

  • License: A General Contractor (GC) license is a strong plus, though not strictly required.
  • Experience: Proven track record in finish carpentry, handyman-level repairs, and managing multiple job sites at once.
  • Business Development (Bonus): Candidates who bring existing client relationships, active contracts, or warm leads are highly desirable.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Structure: Full-time salary W2 or 1099
  • Equipment: Company vehicle and company tools provided, with flexibility to use personal preferred tool brands.
  • Benefits: Health/dental/vision coverage, PTO, paid holidays
  • Growth: Direct path to shaping internal operations and crew structure as the company scales.
