About Our School

St. Michael's Catholic Preparatory School is a coeducational Catholic school serving students from Pre-K 3 through 12th grade in Austin, Texas. The Lower School comprises grades PK3-4th, the Middle School houses grades 5-8, and the Upper school includes grades 9-12. Purpose

The After Prep/Study Hall Teacher supports the mission of St. Michael's Catholic Preparatory School by creating a safe, structured, and supportive environment for Middle School students participating in the After Prep program. Working under the guidance of the Associate Director of Auxiliary Programs, this position supervises students during after-school study hall hours, helping students remain productive, respectful, and engaged while completing homework, studying independently, and awaiting parent pickup. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with adolescents and value building positive relationships with students in a supportive school community rooted in Catholic values.


Essential Job Functions

  • Supports and upholds the Catholic identity and mission of St. Michael's Prep
  • Serves as a positive role model and reflects the values of St. Michael's Prep
  • Supervises middle school students during after-school study hall
  • Maintains a calm, safe, respectful, and structured environment conducive to studying and independent work
  • Encourages students to use study hall time productively and remain on task
  • Provides basic homework support, organization assistance, and encouragement as needed
  • Monitors student behavior and reinforces school expectations appropriately
  • Takes attendance and manages accurate sign-in/sign-out procedures
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with students, staff
  • Responds appropriately to student needs, including minor behavioral concerns or injuries
  • Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates professionalism in all responsibilities
  • Assists with transitions, dismissal, and parent pickup procedures

Requirements

ย Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with middle school-aged students preferred
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • EIM Training with the Diocese of Austin (or willingness to complete upon hire)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Enjoyment of and enthusiasm for working with middle school students
  • Ability to maintain structure and consistency in a study hall environment
  • Strong communication and classroom management skills
  • Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Ability to stay calm and composed in a busy after-school environment
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative when needed

Work Schedule

  • Required to work weekday afternoons during program hours, generally Monday through Friday from 3:45-6:00 PM, occasional half-days would require work 12:30-6:00 PM.

Mental/Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Frequent movement, including walking, standing, bending, and active play
  • Supervision of students in environments with noise, activity, and varying weather conditions
