What is a student manager?

Student Managers are students employed by schools or universities to assist in the management and coordination of various programs, departments, or teams, often in athletics, residence life, or student organizations. Their responsibilities typically include administrative support, organizing events or practices, maintaining equipment or records, and serving as a liaison between staff and students. This role helps develop leadership, organizational, and communication skills, making it a valuable experience for future careers. Student Managers often balance these duties with their academic responsibilities, gaining practical, real-world experience while still in school.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a student manager?

To thrive as a Student Manager, you typically need strong organizational abilities, leadership skills, and experience in managing teams or projects, often demonstrated through prior student leadership roles. Familiarity with scheduling software, communication platforms, and basic office productivity tools is common. Excellent interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and the ability to motivate peers set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure effective coordination, foster a positive team environment, and drive successful completion of student-led initiatives.

What are some common challenges faced by student managers and how can they be addressed?

Student Managers often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as overseeing peers, coordinating events, and handling administrative tasks, all while managing their own academic workload. Balancing authority with approachability can be challenging, especially when supervising fellow students. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication, set boundaries early, and practice effective time management. Seeking guidance from supervisors and actively participating in training opportunities can also help Student Managers develop their leadership and organizational skills.

What is the difference between Student Manager vs Student Coordinator?

A Student Coordinator often handles logistical planning, communication, and event coordination. The roles may overlap, but Student Managers usually have more leadership responsibilities, whereas Student Coordinators focus on execution and support tasks.

Do student managers get paid?

Student managers are often paid for their responsibilities, which can include supervising peers, organizing schedules, and handling administrative tasks. Payment varies by organization and may include hourly wages, stipends, or academic credit, depending on the institution's policies and the specific role. Some student management positions are volunteer-based or offer non-monetary benefits such as experience or leadership development.

This position is designed as a mentored undergraduate research experience. The undergraduate research assistant will provide structured research support during the project's pilot fieldwork and analysis phases, including recruitment coordination, field logistics, data organization, and research documentation. • Assist with formatting of research documentation, reports, and final deliverables
• Participate in scheduled research meetings and provide progress updates
• Perform additional research support tasks as assigned by the project leads
Note: This position does not involve leading data analysis, interpretation of findings, or independent authorship.
Requirements:
• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Purdue University
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Willingness and availability to travel to South Bend, Indiana with the research team for scheduled pilot site visits during summer and fall 2026. Travel costs are covered by the project (no cost to the student). Expected trips 2.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a research team
• Ability to work Fall 2026 for approximately 5-7 hours* weekly (mid-August through December 31), with peak hours during pilot fieldwork (August-September) and end-of-project deliverables (November-December)
Hours will vary by project phase and are not guaranteed weekly.
Hourly pay rate: $15 per hour.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Coursework or interest in research methods, environmental design, psychology, sociology, or related fields
• Interest in research related to the design of the built environment and/or people-environment relationships, interior design, aging, health, or social well-being
