Job description

Reporting to the Director of the Library & University Librarian, the Library Assistant FT will participate in all aspects of circulation, public services, and daily library operations at the Oglethorpe University Philip Weltner Library. Evening work (1:30 pm - 10 pm) and occasional Saturdays (12 pm - 5 pm) are required.
Essential Duties
  1. Assist in building operations, including opening and closing procedures.
  2. Provide customer service when assisting patrons with questions including but not limited to, circulation policies, patron accounts, course reserves, and technology.
  3. Serve as the student assistant supervisor, overseeing daily duties and library projects during assigned shifts.
  4. Assist with outreach activities and library programming.
  5. Assist in developing, implementing, evaluating, and streamlining library procedures and workflows.
  6. Collect and compile information from library systems and vendors regarding circulation and usage statistics to support assessment and help identify trends.
  7. Participate in Oglethorpe community events and programs to build meaningful relationships.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree. Preference will be given to applicants who are currently enrolled in an MLIS or Master of Archival Studies program.
  2. Availability to work evenings (1:30pm - 10pm) and occasional Saturdays (12pm - 5pm).
  3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to understand and solve complex issues.
  5. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Customer service experience, preferably in a university and/or library setting.
  2. Supervisory experience, preferably with supervising college-aged students.
  3. Experience with social media platforms (such as Facebook and Instagram) and basic design tools (such as Canva).
  4. Experience with an integrated library system (ILS), preferably OCLC WorldShare Management Services.

Pay Rate
$17.50 per hour for 40 hours per week. This position is benefits-eligible and not eligible for overtime.
About the Philip Weltner Library
The Philip Weltner Library serves as the academic heart of the University. Serving students, faculty and staff members, and alumni, the dedicated staff offer assistance in multiple formats over different platforms. Physically, the Library houses about 250,000 books with an additional 300,000 available electronically. In addition, over 300 databases provide access to hundreds of thousands of journals and scholarly sources. Also, the Library houses the University Archives and Special Collections. Often the Library partners with other campus departments for outreach services to patrons.
