To thrive as a Student Counselor Intern, you need foundational knowledge in counseling theories, active listening, and rapport-building, often gained through coursework in psychology or counseling and enrollment in a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with case management software, student information systems, and confidentiality protocols is typically expected. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and effective communication help interns connect with students and collaborate with staff. These skills and qualities are vital for providing supportive guidance, maintaining trust, and promoting student well-being within educational environments.

What types of support and supervision can Student Counselor Interns expect during their internship?

Job description

Join our team of dynamic, supportive, and passionate counselors at Endeavor Health Services (formerly Mid-Erie Mental Health Services). Our Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) is an innovative approach to treatment designed to treat the whole person through a comprehensive range of services, including mental health and substance use disorder services.

We are currently looking for interns for the upcoming Fall 2026 semester.  This is an unpaid internship.  This location serves forensically connected clients from a variety of referral sources including US Probation, the Bureau of Prisons, NYS Parole, County Probations, the Courts, etc. Candidates must have an interest in working with a diverse population of adults with mental health and/or substance abuse issues including the forensics population.

The Behavioral Health Counselor internship is perfect for current students in Social Work master’s degree program.  You’ll gain valuable resume experience and build relevant skills like screening clients, assessments, clinical interviews, running groups, documentation and learning an electronic records system.

Our interns will be a part of our clinical team and will be responsible for completing documentation, writing progress notes, treatment/safety plans and other required paperwork.  Interns will observe and eventually run supervised client sessions and/or groups.  Ultimately, the counselor intern will help Endeavor Health Services provide excellent care for our clients.
