We are currently seeking an experienced Steel Shop Manager / Night Shift Plant Supervisor to lead our second-shift operations at our Elmore, Alabama facility.

Position Overview

We are seeking a decisive and experienced Steel Shop Manager to oversee second-shift fabrication operations while serving as the senior on-site Plant Supervisor during evening hours. This dual-role position is responsible for managing daily steel fabrication activities, ensuring production goals are achieved, maintaining OSHA and AWS compliance, and providing strong leadership across the facility in the absence of daytime management.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in structural steel fabrication, proven leadership abilities, strong technical knowledge of welding and fabrication processes, and the ability to make sound operational decisions independently.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Steel Shop Management

  • Supervise all structural steel fabrication processes, including welding, fitting, cutting, CNC machining, drilling, and material handling.
  • Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials to maximize production efficiency while minimizing downtime.
  • Read and interpret structural blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication specifications.
  • Troubleshoot fabrication issues and provide technical guidance to production personnel.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance is completed on fabrication equipment, including saws, drill lines, press brakes, welding equipment, and other shop machinery.
  • Monitor production schedules and ensure customer deadlines are met.

Night Shift Plant Supervision

  • Serve as the highest-ranking supervisor on-site during second shift.
  • Oversee plant security, emergency response procedures, and facility operations.
  • Make real-time operational decisions regarding production, equipment failures, staffing, and workflow.
  • Coordinate communication and production hand-offs between first and second shifts.
  • Conduct shift meetings and communicate priorities to production teams.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Enforce OSHA safety regulations, PPE requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Lead incident investigations, near-miss reporting, and root cause analysis.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe manufacturing environment.
  • Ensure all fabricated products meet AWS, AISC, customer specifications, and internal quality standards.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve quality, efficiency, and workplace safety.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop welders, fabricators, machine operators, and production personnel.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide coaching and feedback.
  • Assist with employee discipline, conflict resolution, and HR-related issues.
  • Identify training needs and implement employee development programs.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, quality, and safety.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in structural steel fabrication, heavy manufacturing, or metal fabrication.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes.
  • Experience with MIG, TIG, and FCAW welding processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and weld symbols.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions during off-shift operations.
  • Experience using ERP/MRP systems for production scheduling and inventory management.

Preferred

  • OSHA 30 Certification.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or previous AWS certifications.
  • Experience with AISC quality standards.
  • Previous experience managing fabrication shops or manufacturing facilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 10 hours per shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working in a heavy manufacturing environment with exposure to:
    • High noise levels
    • Dust
    • Heat and humidity
    • Temperature fluctuations
  • Ability to safely work around heavy machinery and welding operations.
