Job Tittle : Structural Design Engineer
Location: Birmingham, Alabama (Onsite)
Role Overview
This position is for a Structural Design Engineer supporting the Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group and the Transmission Line Design Group. The role involves producing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations. The work emphasizes safety, quality, scheduling, and cost-effectiveness. This position requires the ability to work in a remote environment when not in the office and involves travel of approximately 15%.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare calculation and design packages for substation and transmission line facilities using CAD-based tools.
  • Design and analyze new or modified substation structures, performing reinforced concrete design and structural steel analysis.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and internal committee members to resolve standards and material issues.
  • Provide support to Construction Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance.
  • Conduct site visits for projects, including pre-construction, during construction, and post-construction meetings.
  • Participate in design review meetings and provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.
  • Support the company's design criteria and standardization efforts.
  • Manage multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use time management skills to achieve project goals.
Required Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering is required.
Experience: A minimum of 10 years of experience in structural steel and concrete design is required. Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering is also required. Prior foundation design experience is necessary.
Technical Skills:
  • Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, and ACI codes.
  • Working knowledge of AWS welding standards and relevant OSHA codes.
  • Understanding of software such as ANSYS, MathCAD, and STAAD Pro.
  • Understanding of deep foundation design utilizing tools like AllPile, LPILE, and FAD Tools.
  • Experience with analyzing steel connections and reinforced concrete design.

Preferred Qualifications
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification or a Professional Engineering License is preferred.
  • Experience with seismic, wind, and vibration analysis is preferred.
  • Design experience in transmission line structures and/or foundations is a plus.
General Qualifications
  • Proficiency with standard office software applications.
