The Leidos Energy, Infrastructure, and Automation operation helps solve utilities’ complex challenges through our full life-cycle, performance-based solutions. Utilities consistently come to Leidos for reliable power expertise, as reflected through our work with more than 75 investor-owned utilities and more than 100 municipals/cooperatives across the country as well as a growing number of private developers.

Leidos' Energy and Infrastructure Consulting (E&IC) Division is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer with strong design knowledge of power projects in civil, geotechnical, hydrological, and structural design sub-disciplines. As a valued team member you will work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with opportunities for career development and growth.

Location: Ideally, this person would be located within commuting distance of Denver, CO or Framingham, MA area and work at least three days in the office weekly. Fully remote would be considered on a case-by-case basis. There is an identical senior level opening (8+ years of relevant experience) which is remote. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Review civil and structural designs of new and existing power generation projects including wind, solar, hydro, battery energy storage systems, and thermal projects. 

  • Support Project Managers during transactional due diligence reviews. 

  • Review design codes applicable to the project under review, EPC Contract specifications, and design and equipment manufacturer drawings and calculations prepared by others,

  • Provide subject matter expertise in civil and structural design, review of EPC Contract specifications, and review of drawings and calculations by others.

  • Assist with monitoring and managing projects, developing sales proposals, and completing technology/bankability reviews as needed.

  • Provide Owner’s Engineering and Advisory support.

What does Leidos need from me?

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil or Structural engineering with four plus years of experience working on industrial, power delivery, or power generation project designs or other relevant experience.

  • Team player with ability to communicate effectively with internal staff such as Project Manager’s and SMEs from other disciplines, as well as with external parties such as Owners, Developers, Lenders, Investors, and Manufacturers. 

  • Experience providing high level reviews of engineer’s finite element analysis models, hand and software generated calculations, design drawing packages, and the overall design basis/methodology selected and deployed related to peer reviews, fatal flaw reviews, conformance to industry standard practices, conformance to appropriate design codes, and conformance with project specifications.

  • Competency with various governing design codes used in civil, structural, and geotechnical design, such as the International Building Code (IBC), ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC, AISI, and others. Familiarity with international codes a plus.

  • Familiarity with structural analysis software including finite element analysis such as STAAD or RISA 3D. Knowledge of Mathcad, AutoCAD, and other structural analysis software is a plus.

  • Ability to successfully meet client deadlines on multiple projects under pressure. Clients requiring subject matter expertise consulting could include private equity, infrastructure and hedge funds, investment and commercial banks, private developers, legal and financial advisors, original equipment manufacturers, DOE, and EIA, among others.

  • Ability to manage schedule commitments related to multiple project reviews at one time.

  • Willingness to travel for project site visits in support of reviews. Travel could include the potential for international travel. The position can periodically include weeks with extended work hours to support client(s) needs.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft 365 and Adobe/Bluebeam.

Favorable if you have:

  • Master’s degree in civil/structural engineering.

  • FE/EIT certification with aspiration to obtain professional engineer licensure.

  • Professional Engineer’s (PE) license.

  • Licensed Structural Engineer (SE).

  • Field engineering experience during the construction of projects.

  • Spanish language speaking and reading skills.

  • Familiarity with large construction projects – industrial, large commercial, mechanical, and electrical systems, and/or electrical transmission and distribution experience.

  • Experience in the design of power generation projects, including natural gas combined and simple cycle, wind turbine foundations, solar racking/trackers and the pile foundations, and rooftop solar systems is a strong differentiator.

  • Familiarity with review of construction specifications and submittals.

  • Familiarity with construction documentation such as ECN’s, CD’s, RFI’s, and NCR’s.
