How much do structural analysis engineer jobs pay per hour?
What is the difference between Structural Analysis Engineer vs Civil Engineer?
| Aspect | Structural Analysis Engineer | Civil Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Analyzing and designing structural components and systems | Designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure like roads, bridges, and buildings |
| Certifications | FE/EIT, PE (Structural) | FE/EIT, PE (Civil) |
| Work Environment | Engineering firms, construction sites, consulting | Construction sites, government agencies, consulting firms |
| Industry Usage | Common in structural design projects | Broader, includes structural but also transportation, environmental, and geotechnical |
While both roles require engineering credentials and often work in similar environments, Structural Analysis Engineers specialize in analyzing and designing structural components, whereas Civil Engineers have a broader scope including infrastructure and environmental projects. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.
What Does a Structural Analysis Engineer Do?
As a structural analysis engineer, you test equipment, buildings, and manufactured products to determine whether or not they meet performance goals, standards, regulations, and requirements. You may perform a stress test on various materials, monitor construction data, evaluate equipment or design blueprints, and otherwise help to ensure the final product is structurally sound. Most structural analysis engineers focus on building construction, but some work with aircraft, cars, or other heavy equipment instead. This job is highly time-sensitive because construction often cannot proceed until structural analysis checks are done. So, the ability to work quickly and efficiently is essential to success in this role.

Job description
Job summary
The Structural Engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and integrity of structural components for new and existing construction projects. You will work closely with architects, project managers, and on-site contractors to ensure all designs are safe, efficient, cost-effective, and compliant with all relevant building codes and regulations. This role will involve both office-based design and on-site inspection duties.
Key responsibilities
Conduct structural analysis, including calculating loads, pressures, and stresses on foundations, beams, columns, and walls.
Prepare detailed structural designs, drawings, and specifications using computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as AutoCAD and Revit.
Select appropriate construction materials, such as steel, concrete, wood, and masonry, based on project specifications and structural requirements.
Collaborate with architects, designers and other engineering disciplines to develop integrated and buildable designs.
Provide technical guidance during all phases of construction, from conception to completion.
Review shop drawings and provide feedback to colleagues.
Oversee and inspect the work of contractors and sub-contractors on-site to ensure adherence to design specifications.
Ensure all designs and construction practices comply with local, state, and federal building codes, regulations, and safety standards.
Advise on repair options, demolition plans, and modifications for existing structures.
Manage project budgets and timelines related to the structural scope of work.
Investigate and diagnose structural issues or failures, and provide solutions for repairs or modifications.
Inspecting buildings to assess their structural integrity
Qualifications and skills Required
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
5 years of proven experience as a Structural Engineer, preferably within a construction or engineering firm. (Commercial construction environment is a plus)
Proficiency in structural analysis and design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit).
In-depth knowledge of building codes, standards, and construction methods.
Deep knowledge of construction materials and methodologies.
Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license is a plus but not required.
