Job description

Job Title

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessing the needs and planning intervention for adult eligible patients and their families (where applicable)
  • Facilitating the delivery of care as expected from a stroke/epilepsy-neurophysiology subspecialist and a general Neurologist (when applicable)
  • Performing initial histories and physical examinations
  • Ordering appropriate diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, EEGs, EMGs and other electrodiagnostic tests
  • Performing and supervising lumbar punctures, performing and supervising Botulinum toxin injections and nerve blocks, as needed
  • Performing specialty specific scales such as, MMSE/MOCA, NPI, GDS as appropriate
  • Assisting individuals/families to achieve optimal levels of health through collaboration with medical and health care professionals
  • Exercising medical decision-making and provides a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for a specific group of patients
  • Exhibiting leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and/or studies
  • Involvement in direct patient care, patient and family teaching, staff education and multidisciplinary consultations and collaborations
  • Participation in education of PA students, NPs, Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students
  • Supervision of mid-level practitioners as assigned
  • Consistent demonstration of expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill multi-symptomatic patients
  • Serving as a resource person for standards development in health care in quality improvement concerns
  • Initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies
  • Providing education and counseling of patients and families in neurological conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs; and other duties as assigned
  • Proficiency in other components of patient management such as charting, progress notes, signatures, preparation of consults, referrals, telephone consults with specialists at the Medical Center that are an integral part of the clinical team
  • Ability to integrate both mandated health screening and guidelines for treatment into the practice
  • The incumbent will have basic proficiency with a computer and willingness to learn neurological disorders clinical management and procedures, including use of electronic templates
  • Clinic progress notes will be completed on the same or within 24 hours of seeing a patient. Progress notes of patients seen by trainees will be signed in a timely fashion. Answer in a timely manner My Health e-Vet messages, and clear CPRS alerts
  • Participation in NCL's various structured educational programs including noon lecture series, patient/caregiver education conferences, patient/caregiver educational newsletters, community educational initiatives, etc.
  • Initiate specialty specific research project/s and support/participate in current research initiatives.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm; may include extended hours and weekends when assigned weekend Ward service.
