Value Stream Manager

Armstrong World Industries, Inc. (AWI) has an opening for a Value Stream Manager located in Macon, GA. Under the guidance of the Assistant Plant Manager, this position is responsible for effective management and coordination of the board mill Value Stream activities. The role is responsible for developing and maintaining systems for continuous improvement across all processes while ensuring effective performance of production, maintenance, engineering, quality assurance, and environmental compliance within the business units. This position also provides leadership to drive the plant safety process and support the Value Stream's efforts toward achieving plant goals and objectives.

What You'll Be Doing

Value Stream & Operations Leadership

  • Manage and coordinate Boardmill Value Stream activities under the direction of the Assistant Plant Manager
  • Lead production, maintenance, engineering, quality assurance, and environmental compliance activities within the business unit
  • Manage multiple production supervisors across a 24/7 manufacturing operation
  • Routinely visit production operations and troubleshoot problem areas related to:
    • Mechanical downtime
    • Production schedules
    • Product quality
  • Make operational decisions and engage technical staff as needed for support
  • Determine manpower requirements to meet production schedules
  • Promote regular communication and integration between maintenance and production teams
  • Implement elements of the organizational development (OD) plan, including:
    • Maintenance strategy
    • Process control strategy
    • Organizational strategy

Safety & Compliance

  • Lead and promote the Plant Safety Process across the Value Stream
  • Maintain strong operating discipline and awareness around plant safety policies
  • Drive safety-focused Lean events related to process effectiveness and cost reduction
  • Promote excellence in housekeeping and workplace organization

Continuous Improvement & Lean Manufacturing

  • Develop and maintain systems for continuous improvement across all processes
  • Maintain quality performance through systems management and Lean principles
  • Support and participate in Lean Manufacturing initiatives
  • Recommend and manage Lean events focused on:
    • Safety
    • Process effectiveness
    • Cost reduction
  • Establish Lean events to improve housekeeping and reduce operational effort/cost

Leadership, Employee Relations & Development

  • Lead, coach, and support supervisors in policy interpretation, labor relations, and operational performance
  • Assist with grievance resolution procedures
  • Interview and help select qualified employees
  • Ensure onboarding, departmental induction, and job training are completed effectively
  • Promote positive employee relations and maintain strong communication with employees
  • Support employee involvement through:
    • Frequent employee meetings
    • Problem-solving activities
    • Recognition programs
    • Information sharing
    • Delegation of responsibility
  • Promote continuous employee skill development and supervisor candidacy training
  • Provide ongoing performance assessment and feedback for supervisors and technical staff

  • Work closely with the Plant Leadership Team and other Value Stream Managers
  • Communicate business unit performance, operational issues, and improvement activities
