Strategic Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategic manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Strategic Manager, you need strong analytical abilities, business acumen, and a background in management or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with strategic planning tools, data analysis software (such as Excel or Tableau), and project management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Strategic Managers collaborate effectively and drive organizational change. These skills and qualities are essential for developing, implementing, and overseeing strategies that ensure long-term business success.

What is a strategic manager?

Strategic Managers are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing an organization’s long-term goals and strategies. They analyze internal and external environments to identify opportunities, set objectives, and ensure resources are allocated effectively to achieve business growth. Strategic Managers work closely with executives and department leaders to align business operations with the company’s vision and mission. Their role is crucial for ensuring the organization remains competitive and adapts to market changes.

How does a strategic manager typically collaborate with other departments to drive company objectives?

Strategic Managers play a crucial role in cross-functional collaboration by working closely with departments like marketing, finance, operations, and HR. They facilitate alignment on long-term goals, coordinate the execution of strategic initiatives, and ensure that all teams are moving in the same direction. Regular meetings, project updates, and joint planning sessions are common, allowing Strategic Managers to gather insights, address challenges, and foster a culture of teamwork. This collaborative approach is key to effectively implementing company-wide strategies and achieving organizational success.

What is the difference between Strategic Manager vs Business Analyst?

KPMG

Montreal, QC

Full-time

Re-posted 28 days ago

Job description

Overview

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

We are looking for a high-performing Engagement Manager to join our growing Transformation & Turnaround team in Montreal. You will lead high-stakes mandates where clients need results fast performance is slipping, cash is tight, confidence is fragile, and leadership needs a clear path from diagnosis → decisions → execution → measurable impact. All this in the context of strategy, performance improvement and transactions.

What you will do

1) Transformation delivery

  • Lead end-to-end engagements delivering performance improvement across revenue, cost, and cash levers
  • Translate objectives into a structured delivery plan: workstreams, milestones, owners, dependencies, and governance
  • Drive initiative design and mobilization: sizing logic, business cases, execution plans, and value tracking tied to P&L/cash
  • Establish and run a transformation “control tower” that keeps execution on pace and removes blockers fast

2) Analytics & modeling (turning data into decisions)

  • Supervise teams to run analytical models (Excel, Alteryx, Python) to quantify operational and financial drivers (e.g., volume, pricing, cost-to-serve, productivity, capacity, working capital)
  • Clean, structure, and analyze messy datasets; create transparent methods and client-ready outputs with clear narratives
  • Develop sensitivity/scenario analyses to support decision-making and executive discussions

3) Performance improvement in pressured environments

  • Support stabilization when required (near-term cash visibility, working capital actions, spend controls, rapid levers)
  • Lead operational and commercial deep dives (procurement, supply chain, SG&A, pricing, cost-to-serve, productivity)
  • Mobilize teams across the client organization and keep owners accountable to deliverables and timelines

4) Team leadership & practice building

  • Coach and develop analysts; raise the bar on structured problem solving and executive-ready outputs
  • Contribute to practice building: proposals, reusable tools/templates, playbooks, and delivery accelerators
  • Help strengthen our delivery standards and ways of working across the team

What you bring to the role
  • 6–12+ years of experience in management consulting, transformation, performance improvement, turnaround/restructuring, PE ops, or equivalent execution leadership roles
  • Strong problem-solving skills (structured thinking + quantitative rigor) with the ability to convert analysis into decisions and execution
  • Proven delivery leadership across complex, cross-functional workstreams with tight timelines and high expectations
  • Strong financial fluency: ability to connect initiatives to P&L, balance sheet, and cash; working capital understanding is a strong asset
  • Excellent communication skills in French and English (written and verbal); ability to lead executive discussions and build crisp narratives
  • Undergraduate degree in business/commerce, engineering, economics, operations, or related field; MBA, Master’s, CFA, or equivalent is an asset

Traits That Matter In This Role

  • High ownership: you take accountability for outputs and proactively solve what’s missing
  • Curiosity and learning agility: you seek better methods and sharpen the team’s toolkit
  • Practical orientation: you care about what will actually work and how it translates into measurable results
  • In-person collaboration mindset: you enjoy working from the office regularly for faster learning and stronger delivery

Nice to have

  • Hands-on experience with Alteryx, Python or Power BI (or demonstrated ability to learn quickly)
  • Exposure to commercial strategy, M&A, post-merger integration, turnaround/transformation, cost reduction, working capital
  • Experience with operational improvement toolkits (Lean/Six Sigma, process mapping, KPI systems)
  • Ability to travel occasionally

This position requires proficiency in both French and English. The selected candidate may be required to support and collaborate with English-speaking colleagues or stakeholders from KPMG Canada located outside of Quebec. This requires the ability to communicate effectively in both spoken and written French and English.
