Job description

Challenge Island is hiring fun, energetic, and reliable instructors to lead hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programs for kids ages 6—13 this summer!

Think: Survivor meets school—with teamwork, creativity, and a whole lot of fun.

As an instructor, you’ll guide small groups of children through engaging, screen-free challenges that build problem-solving skills, creativity, and confidence. We provide all lesson plans, materials, and training—you bring the enthusiasm and leadership.

Programs are held at local community education and parks & recreation locations throughout West Michigan, including Zeeland, Hudsonville, Grandville, Rockford, Caledonia, and Byron Township.

Schedule & Compensation:

  • Part-time: 12–24 hours per week
  • Monday–Thursday only
    • Morning shift: 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM
    • Afternoon shift: 12:30 PM – 5:30 PM
  • Pay: $22–$30 per hour (based on experience)
  • Camps run weekly throughout the summer; schedules can vary week to week based on enrollment and location needs

Teaching experience is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure student safety and participation

Requirements:

  • Experience working with elementary or middle school-aged children
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to local program sites
  • Energetic and physically able to keep up with active children
  • Positive attitude and strong leadership skills
  • Organized, dependable, and able to manage a group independently
  • Calm under pressure with a good sense of humor
  • Must enjoy working with children
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred—but we’ll provide training if you don’t have it yet

Additional Requirements:

  • Must pass a criminal background check

Positions start in mid-June, and camps run through mid-August. Only qualified candidates will be considered.
