What is statutory accounting?

A Statutory Accounting job involves preparing and maintaining financial records in compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards. Professionals in this role ensure that financial statements adhere to statutory accounting principles (SAP), which are often used in regulated industries like insurance. They analyze financial data, prepare reports for regulators, and ensure compliance with laws and guidelines. This role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of financial regulations, and proficiency in accounting principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in statutory accounting, and why are they important?

To thrive in Statutory Accounting, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial reporting, and a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance and, ideally, CPA certification. Proficiency with accounting software (such as SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced Excel skills are typically required, along with familiarity with statutory reporting standards like GAAP or IFRS. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong organizational and communication skills are important for ensuring accuracy and collaborating across departments. These skills are vital for maintaining compliance, preparing accurate financial statements, and supporting the organization's financial integrity.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in statutory accounting roles?

Statutory accounting professionals often navigate complex and frequently changing regulatory requirements, which means staying current with new standards and ensuring meticulous compliance in all reporting. Tight deadlines are common, especially during close periods or external audits, and require strong time management skills. Collaboration with various departments, such as tax, legal, and operations teams, is essential for gathering accurate data and resolving discrepancies. Overcoming these challenges is key to producing accurate statutory reports and supporting the organization's overall financial transparency and compliance.

Job description

About Havenly
At Havenly Brands, we're building this generation's premier destination for all things home. Alongside our award winning Havenly design services, we proudly own and operate some of the best home furnishings brands in the business including Havenly, Interior Define, The Citizenry, Burrow, Inside, and St.Frank. Our family of brands is growing and we're looking for amazing people to join us on this journey!
Havenly is not just the #1 residential interior design service in America - we're architecting the future of how millions design their homes. With our proprietary 3D visualization technology, our worldwide network of designers empowered with AI tools, and our revolutionary customer-facing AI design assistant, we're at the inflection point of a massive market transformation. This isn't just another operations role, it's the opportunity to build the category-defining business at the intersection of AI, design, and commerce.
Our Core Values
  • Exhibit Gumption: meet every challenge with spirit and energy; believe the impossible is possible.
  • Overperform: work hard, move fast, be scrappy.
  • Stay Playful: no jerks, no whiners; have fun and keep perspective.
  • Act Like an Owner: be accountable, speak up, act in Havenly's best interest.
About the Role
We are currently looking for a Vice President, Accounting & Controller to join our team in Denver, CO. In this role, you will work closely with the leadership team, reporting to the CFO, to drive growth and seek improvements in operations processes, with responsibility for overseeing all accounting operations including billing, A/R, A/P, GL, payroll, fixed assets, and revenue recognition. Our ideal candidate is highly motivated and takes initiative to analyze financial performance and investigate and correct potential weaknesses.
What You'll Own
  • Own and optimize all aspects of accounting operations, including accounts payable and general ledger functions, monthly and quarterly close processes, and quarterly review and annual audit procedures.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and compliance.
  • Coordinate all audit activity, including annual financial and contract audits.
  • Manage timely filing of all required tax returns and other statutory filings.

What You'll Drive
  • Manage and lead a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance, mentoring, and fostering a collaborative work environment, with an eye on developing a future-ready accounting team.
  • Lead the development and improvement of processes and procedures to establish and reinforce internal controls for accurate and repeatable financial statement reporting.
  • Manage the resolution of complex accounting issues by preparing accounting memos detailing significant transactions and practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights that drive informed decision-making across the organization.
  • Implement and maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Assist in board presentations and support the budget and forecasting processes.
We Are Looking for People Who
  • Have a CPA designation with 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role, with strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Bring proficiency in financial software systems (NetSuite strongly preferred), ERPs, and advanced Excel skills.
  • Approach ambiguous problems by figuring out what's broken and acting on it, not waiting to be told what's next.
  • Move fast, take real ownership of outcomes, and hold themselves to a high bar.
  • Collaborate well across teams, with a low-ego, no-drama approach to getting things done.

Bonus points if you have experience working in e-commerce or technology-related industries.
At Havenly, we're building with AI as part of how we work. We're looking for people who are genuinely curious about AI-assisted tools and eager to adopt them; this is about openness, not existing expertise.
The Details
  • Employment type: Full-time, exempt
  • Location: In office in Denver, CO at our beautiful headquarters in Cherry Creek.
  • Compensation: $200,000 - $240,000 base, dependent upon experience, plus an annual bonus, and the potential to earn equity over time
  • Benefits: generous PTO, volunteer days off, health benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Disability), 401(k) with company match, paid parental leave, plus Havenly-specific perks: free design services, furniture discounts, and merchandise/anniversary credits.
  • Work authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. We do not offer any sponsorship.
  • Application deadline: September 30, 2026 unless further applications are needed.
Equal Opportunity
Havenly is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Havenly's employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other legally protected status.
