What is a startup?

A startup is a newly established company that is typically in the early stages of development and aims to create a unique product or service to address a market need. Startups are often characterized by innovation, rapid growth potential, and a focus on scalability. They usually operate with limited resources and seek funding from investors to grow their business quickly. Unlike established companies, startups often face high uncertainty and risk but can offer significant rewards if successful.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a startup founder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Startup Founder, you need strong business acumen, problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of your industry or market, often supported by entrepreneurial experience or education. Familiarity with project management tools, financial modeling software, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems is typically important. Resilience, adaptability, leadership, and effective communication distinguish successful founders in the fast-paced startup environment. These skills are crucial for navigating uncertainty, inspiring teams, and driving innovation and growth.

What are some common challenges faced when working at a startup, and how can new hires adapt to this environment?

Working at a startup often involves navigating ambiguity, rapidly changing priorities, and taking on responsibilities beyond your formal job description. New hires can adapt by staying flexible, proactively communicating with their team, and embracing a growth mindset. Success in this environment often comes from being resourceful, open to feedback, and willing to learn new skills on the fly. Collaborating closely with colleagues and seeking mentorship within the company can also help you quickly integrate and thrive.

Job description

Description
The Brush Generating Station consists of four power generation units located on a single site. The facility operates a combination of Siemens/Westinghouse W251AA gas turbines, GE Frame 6B gas turbines, and corresponding GE steam turbine systems. The plant requires Field Operators who can safely support the operation, maintenance, startup, shutdown, and troubleshooting of critical power generation equipment while maintaining high standards of safety, reliability, and environmental compliance.
The Field Operator is responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation of plant equipment while coordinating closely with the Control Room Operator (CRO). This role performs both operations and maintenance activities, conducts inspections, monitors equipment performance, responds to plant conditions, and assists with startup, shutdown, and outage activities. Successful candidates are self-motivated, safety-focused, and thrive in a dynamic power generation environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate and monitor plant systems and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient generation.
  • Support plant startup, shutdown, normal operations, and emergency response activities.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and operational rounds.
  • Record operating data, equipment readings, and system parameters.
  • Identify abnormalities and promptly communicate observations to the Control Room Operator.
  • Execute emergency operating procedures and casualty control actions when required.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Identify mechanical and electrical issues and initiate work requests for repairs.
  • Assist maintenance teams during planned outages and major maintenance events.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards throughout plant facilities.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
  • Follow all plant safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings, audits, and training activities.
  • Provide recommendations to improve safety and environmental programs.
  • Maintain familiarity with emergency response procedures and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing technical training programs.
  • Continuously develop operating knowledge of plant systems and equipment.
  • Maintain qualifications and certifications required for the position.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read and interpret plant drawings, procedures, P&IDs, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond effectively to changing operating conditions.
  • Ability to successfully complete plant qualification requirements, including system operating tests and oral review boards.
  • Basic computer proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in power plant operations and/or maintenance.
  • Combined-cycle, combustion turbine, steam turbine, or industrial utility experience.
  • Associate's degree, technical certification, military technical training, or related college coursework.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with water chemistry monitoring and treatment programs.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Work Environment
  • Rotating shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and industrial plant environments.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, lift equipment, and perform physical tasks associated with power plant operations.
  • Participation in outage, call-out, and emergency response activities as required.
