Startup Software Engineer Manager information

What does a startup software engineer manager do?

A Startup Software Engineer Manager is responsible for leading a team of software engineers in a fast-paced startup environment. They oversee the development, testing, and deployment of software products while ensuring alignment with the company’s goals and timelines. In addition to technical leadership, they are involved in hiring, mentoring, and fostering a collaborative culture. Their role often includes hands-on coding, making architectural decisions, and communicating with stakeholders to prioritize and deliver features efficiently. The dynamic nature of startups requires them to be adaptable and proactive in solving both technical and organizational challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a startup software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Startup Software Engineer Manager, you need strong technical expertise in software development, leadership experience, and a proven track record of shipping products, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with agile project management tools like Jira, version control systems such as Git, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is essential. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help you motivate teams and navigate rapid changes. Job description

Who are we and why should you join us?

BetterHelp is on a mission to champion the well-being in all of us and make mental healthcare more accessible to everyone. Founded in 2013, we are now the world's largest online therapy service, providing affordable and convenient therapy across the globe. Our network of over 30,000 licensed therapists has helped millions of people take ownership of their mental health and change their lives forever. And we're not stopping there - as the unmet need for mental health services continues to grow, BetterHelp is committed to being part of the solution.

As a Full Stack Software Engineer at BetterHelp, you'll join a diverse team of licensed clinicians, engineers, product pros, creatives, marketers, and business leaders who share a passion for expanding access to therapy. And as a mental health company, we take employee mental health just as seriously as we do our mission. We invest in our team's well-being and professional development, because we know that business and individual growth go hand-in-hand.

At BetterHelp, you'll carve your own path, make an immediate impact, and be challenged every day - with a supportive community behind you the whole way.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for a talented software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, learning continuously, and building products that make a meaningful difference. This role is ideal for someone who has delivered multiple challenging projects, takes pride in writing thoughtful, maintainable code, and enjoys both mentoring and learning from teammates.

You'll join an engineering culture that values ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and sound technical judgment. We embrace modern engineering practices and thoughtfully adopt new technologies, including AI, to help engineers focus on solving hard problems while keeping human expertise at the center of every decision.

What will you do?
  • You will develop end to end, owning features from technical design and development through deployment, monitoring, and continued improvement.
  • You will write clean, secure, readable, maintainable, and scalable code.
  • You will collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners.
  • You will design, integrate, and build internal and external APIs.
  • You will develop new products and features while improving and modernizing existing systems.
  • You will write and optimize SQL queries and design relational database schemas.
  • You will create and maintain complex backend services and algorithms.
  • You will profile, troubleshoot, and optimize new and legacy code.
  • You will build experiences that work across mobile, tablet, and desktop environments.
  • You will contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and engineering practices that improve quality, reliability, security, and developer experience.
  • You will ship thoughtfully and frequently in an agile environment with continuous deployment.
  • You will care about our product, mission, and long-term success, well beyond checking off development tasks.
  • You will thoughtfully use approved AI-assisted development tools to reduce repetitive work, explore solutions, and improve productivity while applying your own engineering judgment to architecture, implementation, security, privacy, and code quality. Engineers remain accountable for every technical decision.

We use a mix of established and modern technologies to support a platform serving millions of users. As our products evolve, we're continually improving our architecture, modernizing portions of our codebase, and evaluating technologies that help us build secure, reliable, and scalable software.

  • Backend: Linux, nginx, Laravel (PHP), MySQL, Redis
  • Frontend: React, Next.js, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS/SASS
  • Existing technologies you may encounter as we modernize the platform: Twig, Bootstrap, jQuery

We do not expect candidates to have worked with every technology in our environment. We value strong software engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems.

What will you NOT do?
  • You will NOT worry about funding. We have startup energy, with the support and resources of our parent company, Teladoc Health.
  • You will NOT be limited to a narrow set of responsibilities. We encourage employees to contribute ideas, develop new skills, collaborate across teams, and explore opportunities that support both their growth and the growing needs of the business.
  • You will NOT be expected to navigate a culture driven by ego or unnecessary hierarchy. We value respectful collaboration, thoughtful debate, and teammates who are committed to shared success.
  • You will NOT be expected to sacrifice your well-being to make an impact. We work hard and hold ourselves to high standards, all while supporting sustainable ways of working.
  • You will NOT have to wonder why your work matters. The work we do here helps to expand access to mental health care and supports people seeking help when they need it.
Can I work remotely?

Yes. This role can be performed remotely from anywhere in the U.S. While we embrace the flexibility of remote work, we also value opportunities to bring teams together in person for collaboration and connection. BetterHelp covers approved expenses for company-requested travel, and reasonable accommodations are available for employees who are unable to travel.

Requirements
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Deep understanding of web development concepts and principles.
  • Examples of full-stack projects or significant product features.
  • At least one major demonstrable project that includes frontend code, backend code, and a database.
  • Ability to design, develop, and launch a web application or substantial feature from start to finish.
  • Ability to learn quickly, navigate an established codebase, and build new skills independently.
  • A strong sense of ownership and eagerness to build something meaningful.
  • Five or more years of professional web development experience in any stack, solving challenging problems and implementing new features from scratch.
  • Three or more years of experience with SQL, including relational schema design and complex queries.
  • Familiarity with web application, data, and SQL security best practices.
  • Comfort working outside the abstractions of a framework and understanding what is happening behind the scenes.
  • Experience using Git in a collaborative team environment.
  • Sound engineering judgment and a thoughtful approach to modern development tools, including AI assistants, with appropriate attention to security, privacy, and code quality.
Bonus (Helpful, but not required)
  • Experience working with PHP, Laravel, or the LAMP/LEMP ecosystem.
  • Experience with React or Next.js.
  • Experience modernizing established applications or incrementally replacing legacy systems.
  • Experience working in a startup, growth-stage company, or other fast-moving environment.
  • Experience building products in health care, mental health, or another highly regulated or privacy-sensitive field.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting the growth of other engineers.
Benefits
  • Remote work with regular in-person bonding experiences sponsored by the company
  • Competitive compensation
  • Holistic perks program (including free therapy, employee wellness, and more)
  • Excellent health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution
  • The chance to build something that changes lives - and that people love
  • Any piece of hardware or software that will make you happy and productive
  • An awesome community of co-workers

In addition to the base salary, this position is eligible for a performance bonus and the extensive benefits listed here (subject to eligibility requirements): Teladoc Health Benefits 2026.
