What is a startup accountant?

A Startup Accountant manages a startup's financial records, budgeting, tax compliance, and financial reporting. They help founders track cash flow, optimize expenses, and ensure regulatory compliance. Unlike traditional accountants, they often work with rapid growth, fundraising, and financial forecasting to support scaling efforts. Their role is critical in building a strong financial foundation for early-stage companies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a startup accountant?

To thrive as a Startup Accountant, you need strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial analysis, and hands-on experience with bookkeeping, usually supported by a relevant degree or certification such as a CPA. Proficiency in cloud-based accounting software (like QuickBooks or Xero), financial modeling tools, and Excel is often essential. Flexibility, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help you adapt to the dynamic and fast-paced startup environment. These competencies enable you to manage limited resources, ensure compliance, and support sound decision-making critical to a startup's growth.

What typical challenges might a startup accountant face in a new or rapidly growing company?

Startup Accountants often deal with challenges such as rapidly changing priorities, limited documentation or processes, and the need to set up financial systems from scratch. You may be responsible for tasks ranging from routine bookkeeping to strategic financial forecasting, often with limited resources or team support. Additionally, you’ll frequently need to navigate regulatory compliance and work closely with founders or other departments to align financial practices with business goals. These challenges make the role both demanding and highly rewarding for those who thrive in dynamic environments and enjoy building processes as the company grows.

E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. • Support integration and use of NetSuite modules, including Accounts Payable, Inventory, and Manufacturing

Accounts Payable (AP)
  • Review and process vendor invoices, ensuring proper PO, receipt, and invoice matching
  • Ensure accurate coding, approvals, and posting in NetSuite
  • Manage vendor relationships and resolve invoice or payment discrepancies
  • Support payment runs, including ACH, checks, and wire transfers
  • Assist with annual 1099 preparation and reporting

Audit & Compliance Support
  • Prepare schedules, reconciliations, and documentation for external auditors
  • Support internal controls, process documentation, and audit requests

  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite (required); advanced users strongly preferred
  • Experience with accounts payable, vendor management, and payment processing
  • Inventory and COGS accounting experience is a plus
  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, formulas); experience with Google Sheets a plus
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced startup environment
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally

Nice to have:
  • Exposure to revenue recognition (ASC 606)
  • Experience improving accounting processes or system implementations
  • Prior public accounting experience

Additional Requirements
This is a fast-paced, high-impact environment - flexibility to occasionally work extended hours or weekends during critical periods is expected.
$115,000 - $125,000 a year
This is a full time, exempt position, based out of our Arlington, TX location.
The total compensation packaged will be determined by various factors such as your relevant job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
