What is a Standard Cell Design job?

A Standard Cell Design job involves creating and optimizing fundamental building blocks (standard cells) used in digital integrated circuits. Engineers in this role define the cell architecture, design layouts, and ensure timing, power, and area efficiency. They work closely with circuit and physical design teams to deliver high-quality libraries for ASIC and SoC development. Strong skills in CMOS design, EDA tools, and scripting are essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Standard Cell Design position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Standard Cell Design, you need a solid background in electrical or electronics engineering, semiconductor device physics, and CMOS circuit design, typically with a relevant degree. Familiarity with EDA tools like Cadence Virtuoso, Synopsys, and layout verification software, as well as knowledge of physical design rules and scripting languages (e.g., Python or TCL), is essential. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams are valuable soft skills. These competencies enable you to create robust, efficient standard cells that meet performance, area, and power targets critical for advanced chip design.

What are some typical challenges faced in a Standard Cell Design role?

Professionals in Standard Cell Design often encounter challenges related to meeting aggressive performance, power, and area (PPA) targets while adhering to strict design rules and technology constraints. Balancing design trade-offs, resolving design rule violations, and optimizing cells for manufacturability require both technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills. Collaboration with process engineers, verification teams, and EDA tool specialists is common to address issues that arise throughout the design flow. Successfully navigating these challenges improves both the quality and yield of integrated circuits, making this role both vital and intellectually rewarding in semiconductor development.

Job description

Pure Lithium is hiring a highly motivated Senior Cell Engineer to join our R&D and production team. In this role, you will lead and contribute to the design, development, and optimization of advanced battery cells, with a focus on improved performance, safety, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. You will collaborate closely with research associates, scientists, engineers, technicians, and operators to bring the next-generation battery into commercialization.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop cell architectures (electrode coatings, electrolyte systems, separators, current collectors, pouches) to meet performance and safety specifications.
  • Translate customer and application requirements into detailed cell design parameters and engineering specifications.
  • Use modeling, simulation, and past experimental data to inform design decisions and predict performance tradeoffs.
  • Conduct DFMEA and DVP&R to ensure reliability and robustness of designs.
  • Lead prototype builds, establish electrode/cell assembly designs, and evaluate cell performance metrics (capacity, cycle life, impedance, rate capability)
  • Assist with hiring efforts for the R&D team, eventually having direct reports of your own
  • Assess root causes of performance limitations or failures and propose design improvements.
  • Document cell design rules, best practices, and technical specifications to support volume manufacturing.
  • Assist with regular maintenance of key equipment and ensure up-time.
  • Support with safety, organization, and scale-up efforts of the company.
  • Develop SOP's and process optimizations to rapidly and reliably produce cells to qualify PL's materials and electrodes.
  • Work cross-functionally with battery scientists and engineers to optimize cell designs for scalability, yield, and cost.
  • Present technical findings, design reviews, and recommendations to internal stakeholders and leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field (Master's preferred)
  • Proven 5+ years of experience in Li-ion or next-generation battery cell development, with proven contributions in electrode and cell design.
  • Strong knowledge of electrochemistry, cell engineering principles, and component interactions.
  • Hands-on experience with lab-scale electrode preparation, slurry formulation, coating, and coin/pouch/prismatic cell builds.
  • Prior experience with CAD tools and cell design modeling software.
  • Excellent problem-solving, data analysis, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup or innovation-driven environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with lithium metal, solid-state, or high-voltage cathode systems.
  • Background in scaling up laboratory innovations to pilot production environments.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory requirements for energy storage devices.
  • Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers or equipment vendors.
